Deal's Gap, commonly known as "The Dragon", is Tennessee State Route 129, which runs south out of Maryville, TN. Maryville being a few miles south of Knoxville, TN. Are you totally lost, yet? Eastern side of the state. It's down in the Smokey Mountains.

The Crossroads of Time Motorcycle Only Campground is on the North Carolina side of Deal's Gap. Phone: 828-498-2231. You will cross the TN/SC border running south (with your knee puck draggin' the pavement) do 4 downhill turns...a left, straight, right, left, straight, right (as you run passed the Dragon's Den Motorcycle Shop), on the brakes downhill to the intersection of Hwy 129 and Hwy 28 where the Crossroads store, gas, hotel, and camping lay.

Be sure to run the Cherahola Skyway over to Tellico Plains. Long, sweeping, smooth, very limited side-road access, lots of scenic overlooks, and it climbs to an altitude of 5,000-ish feet which is a great cool-weather place to take refuge in the heat of the day when it's hot and humid in the lower altitudes. Careful for the ocassional eye-in-the-sky helicopter patrol (girlfriend got a double-yellow pass ticket from the chopper cop). Check out Wayah Road and be sure to run Hwy 28 south into Franklin. Also, run the Foothills Parkway over to Townsend and back.

I've ridden all over Missouri, eastern Nebraska, central and southern Colorado, central and western Tennessee, Upper Peninsula and mainland Michigan, Ontario Canada, up and down the California coast.

None of them come close to Deal's Gap. I don't think you can find a better place to ride in the USA.

Deals Gap is located in the North Western corner of North Carolina on the border with Tennessee. You can stay at nearby Fontana Village, or in Bryson city when you go. If you go You must also ride US28 south from Bryson city to Franklin. The tail of the dragon is a very nice road. In fact all of the roads in that area are fun to ride. My two favorite rides are the tail of the dragon and the US 28 ride. You may also want to check out the Cherohola skyway as well, nice road. BTW, if you are also into Mountain Bikes the local trails are the best I have ridden. I make the 14 hour drive from Ft. Lauderdale Florida once a year. You should have a lot shorter drive.
