Hi. im still a new rider, and just getting off my 250, looking to move up.
it would be great to jump straight onto an R1 however, dont have the funds or the experience.
so i was thinking of the 02 R6. would it be worthing saving a bit more and getting an 03 or 04...
is there that much difference, or is their any problems i should be aware of on the 02 r6
Thanks.

I would go for an 03 although the 02 is a great bike as well. The 03 is the second generation, eight pounds lighter, 4 or so more HP, has fuel injection, new stronger lighter frame(for 03 Yamaha's new "CF"--controlled fill--technology for casting aluminum), better heat dissipation adn rounder cylinders using ceramic plating material, improved transmission gears and journals for better shiftage, lighter five spoked wheels, suspension remain much the same.
Honestly though, all this adds up to little diffrence that you'll probably notice on the street or even on the race track in very capable hads, but none the less it's there....
Good luck adn let me know what you decided on.

I went with the 02 R6 for my first street bike. Havn't looked back. The stator went out at about 12,000 miles, that's the only problem I've had with it. You wont be dissapointed, especially if you get the 520 conversion. R6 would be a good upgrade , but get what you feel... :thumbup

i also heard the gearbox is really harsh and jumpy... and if u shift over 6,000 revs alot, u can break the gearbox or something.. is this true...
I love yamaha so very keen on the r6 however some people have also suggested the Honda CBR 600RR... what are your opinions?
thanks

I haven't heard of the gearbox issues, but if what you heard is true there should be many complaints out there!!!
Either one you can't go wrong. I own an R1 and am a big Yamaha fan, but the 600RR is an outstanding bike!
