Fat ass wheelie factor

Guys, I just got my bike back from the 600 mile service and I think it's about time to start getting nasty with her. I read all these posts on first and second gear wheelies and I spent the last two days trying to get her up in both gears...no luck. I can get that wheel about 2 inches up and boom...red line:confused: I weigh in at about 210 and I'm wondering if this has anything to do with my inability to get the bike up? Maybe I need to sit differently, or try tugging at the bars...i dunno. Any of you other big kids have trouble starting out?:cryin

should come up without any problems in first gear.... get going about 30mph and crank it wide open and hold it until you're up:rock

   The R1 power wheelies in first gear with just a hefty ammount of throttle. throttle off and then on, and you'll see the wheelie gets scary high very quickly. and no, weight is not a factor. the bike basically wheelies itself.

I also weigh 210 and in first gear she should come up any time you wack open that throttle at just about any speed and any time man I love this bike

try 2nd gear.. you can also do them going 35-40mph using clutch. I used to try to do them on 1st by using just throttle on and off and damn.. it was to scary.. do this: Get going on the 2nd gear to about 35-40mph with your one or two (whatever you prefer) pull the clutch in about 2 inches, just enough so you feel it grip at the same time rev the engine to about 7k and in the same time let the clutch go. IT WILL COME UP...play with it for a while and you will see.. after reading posts here about 1st gear wheelies I started to do 2nd gear clutch ups and its much better. It comes up nice and slow...

Maxxym, When you say, "let the clutch go," do you mean completly dump it? It seems like that might be kind rough on the gears/clutch. Thanks for the advice man:rock

Don't just dump it, as 1: you may flip, 2: you might spin up the rear and 3: you may leave you gear box in the middle of the road hahahaha.... Anyways, let it out quick but don't just let go of it, you'll get the feel for it man..... ONLY 600 miles ???? I'd still be quite gentle with her...

I can get it up in second just by whacking it after backing off to let the suspension compress. I'm still skerd though. And yes it's mental, I let my buddy ride and he bought it up like he was a Jedi or something. Slow and floaty.

try to lean back a little bit when you hit the throttle and it should come right up

In first just twist your right wrist at anything from about 25 mph and it should come up fast. There should be no need for an on off throttle technique in first. And at only 600 miles I personally wouldn't be clutching one up yet. Try 2nd at about 60-65mph with an on off throttle, just make sure your sitting up not leaning forward. Take it slow you'll get it with time.

Here's how I do it (6'1" 215) on my 02: for all of these I put my butt up against the passenger sit to distribute my weight 1st gear: get rolling up to about 30mph then just smoothly roll on the throttle (just a little) and the front will come up. Practice different amounts of throttle to get a feel for what's comfortable. 2nd gear <60mph: ride along, pull in the clutch enough to disengage the gears, increase the revs 500-1000rpm, let the clutch out. Do this as if it was one act.........like clutchgasclutch. As you let the clutch out lean and pull back on the bars and it will come up smooth. Continue to gas it to keep it up. 2nd gear 60-75 mph: ride along, roll off the gas and then quickly back on, as you roll on lean and pull back on the bars. Stay on the gas and it will come up nicely. 3rd gear any speed: get on the pegs (ass off the seat), roll off slightly and back on, as you roll on pull the bars up as if you were pulling it to your chest. Very unnerving at first, but the faster you are going, the smoother and more controllable it is:thumbup. Now if I could learn to shift it while unicycling, I'd be able to stop testing my rev limiter!:rock

(This wreck happend Mothers Day of 2001 I have a new 02 now. ) I was running around 55 to 60mph and getting ready to walk it. I thought was dropping down to 2nd from 6th but dropped down from 5th 1st   . The bike came up SOOOO FAST! Then I think the bike went over on it's right side. Then it flipped over the front tire and slide backwards on it's left side and came to rest on the right side of the road. I came off superman like with my arms in front of me. I rolled on my side around and around for about 30 feet. :crash Just a reminder don't be like me!! http://www.interiorsbyshannon.com/R1wezz.jpg

Easy way to wheelie in almost any gear: Pull in clutch, feed the 1 all the throddle until the engine is screaming and is bouncing off the rev limiter, Let go of the clutch and wheelie with glee:boobies

RUFFSTUFF..... That is the best description I have read on this forum as far as "How to do Wheelies". The first and second gear "gas only" techniques are exactly the same as what I use. Exactly. I haven't messed with third gear or tried the second gear clutch up yet. Based on how accurately you described the gas ups I bet I can go out this afternoon and do the third gear gas and second gear clutch wheelies in just a few runs. Thanks. I shift from first to second alot but have yet to go from second to third while riding a wheelie. When I do shift it is with a simultaneous upshift and throttle release (no clutch). The throttle release is very minor, just a blip. I do this between 8 and 10K. If I have it at a higher rpm than that I cant seem to get it to engage second and I hit neutral and fall. Very embarrassing.

heres how i do it..i do tno worry about my speed caus eyou can be off by throttle positioning..IE slowing down or speeding up.... start off in first and roll i ton to 5 thousand RPM's cut the throttle and when it dips down gas it full throttle.... it will stand right up.. what you are seeing at redline is going to low on the rPM's like 3-4000 and when you gas it you are actually spinning you back tire.... then it can not get rtraction to come up

Does anyone here ever READ their posts before clicking the submit button? ITs liket ryings to reed my ki ds handriting. onNLY HE nows what it saysd. Everyone please be careful out there. It's a fine line between the best wheelie of your life and the worst wheelie of your nightmares. There are brothers out there who weren't fortunate enough to be able to walk away from crossing over that line.:( With that said............WHEELIE ON!:rock

That's one of the dumbest wrecks I've ever heard of. BTW, if you can't bounce an R1 up in 2nd, just give up on the whole wheelie thing. I can do mine with race gearing (2 teeth down in rear) with no trouble at all.

If you're the epitomy of perfection and have never made a mistake while riding, get in line behind "nate bone." Perhaps, since we're obviously in a judgmental frame of mind, you shouldn't be allowed to post....yours is one of the dumbest I have read in at least the last 30 seconds or so.:lol

forget using the clutch...U can do it on the gas alone. I cannot express the importance of full throttle to the stop if it is second gear. If U weigh 210, I think it should be easier becaise of weight transfer..I weigh 150 lbs, so my weight does not "squat" the rear end effectively lifting the front like U shoudl be able to do..heres' bhow I do it...I have a Y2K R1, 4000miles. Note the front end does come up pretty high in second so be careful. :rock I've always been crap at holding wheelies for any sor of duration, mostly due to fear instinct but here's the technique i do for 2nd gear standups on my bone stock bike......roughly 50-55 mph stand up, place knees against the tank and giver some gas chop it off a bit, and then full throttle right to the stop, comes right up everythime now....so now I'm going to try the same thing sitting down as I feel like I'm in more control when sitting down depending on the mods on your bike U may need less throttle, but it sounds like U need more....and relax your grip too always helps... good luck

I just have to add my 2 cents now. I put a 45 tooth sprocket in the rear. For those of you who don't know, that's up 2 teeth. I don't even bother with 1st gear wheelies...if I sneeze in first gear, it'll come up. 2nd gear I go about 25 mph and just roll on the throttle hard at first to bring it up and then adjust the throttle according to the height my bike is at. Now I'm just practicing shifting to 3rd and it is a pain in the butt..

Nate -- Youze a foo. Drop the attitude, everyone makes mistakes... hell, i can walk perfectly, but once every couple months i'll be walking along and trip over a pebble or something like that.. doesn't mean i should give up on walking. Besides which, judging by your massive 12 whole posts, you must be the king stunter on this forum, no? As far as your crash goes.. sorry to hear man. I've had a couple of those "oh i'll drop it into second and mash out a bigass wheelie!" moments on the freeway where i accidently clicked it into 1st.. and the fist-full of throttle i was going to use to bring up second, made first leap up around 11k like nobody's business. Luckily, the 2-3 times i've done this, i just rode it out to 12.5 or whatever, dropped the bike back down, shifted to second, and up i came again. :D
