Subject: [chatter] Warning for Palomar Mountain for Motorcycle riders: Intentional Oil slicks to cause crashes
Oil spills on the grades appear to be intentional to crash motorcyclist.
On Sunday when we met with the PMFD for the donation check, the chief told me and other members within ear shot that twice within the week they have responded to hydrolic fluid in the roadway near the top of the mountain. Last week, they responded to the spill after a motorist called it in after having almost lost control due to the oil. They covered it with sand, swept it up and cleaned up the slickness. They found an empty 5 gal jug of hydrolic oil near the spill. (Fall off a truck???) That was their first thought.
On Saturday (7-24) they had another contact with this time on the east grade near the dump entrance (also on a curve). This time they found 3 empty jugs, same brand as the one earlier in the week. This response took so much sand toabsorb the oil they placed a "loose gravel" sign on the road. This is not accidental spillage. It appears after they thought about it, that both locations were on sharp curves after a straight away (for speed) and that the spills appear to be deliberate. It seems someone is trying to hurt motorcyclist.
The chief also said that last weekend, CHP was out in force writing citations and conducting vehicle inspections, citing anything they could find for violations and had a helicopter buzzing around at low altitude with a video camera filming various locations and motorcyclists. Complaints from residents are on the rise again for speeding bikes, passing on curves over the double yellow and general dangerous driving.
Within the last month, they have had a young military member loose his legs in a crash. Last month they had a fatality when a sport bike lost it in a curve and slid across lanes and hit a harley two up coming the other way. The male Harley rider died, the wife had a fracture or two. The sport bike rider had major road rash even though he had leathers. Another lost the battle with a road sign after crashing into it after sliding out.
Needless to say it is dangerous up on the mountain. Anyone riding up there should be very careful and watchful for oil slicks or debris in the road that could cause a crash. Anyone seeing suspicious activity should try to get a license plate number and description of the person(s) and call the sheriff or CHP.
Also, keep tight to the right edge of your lane as the sport bikes tend to drift over the center routinely. (I had two cross into my lane after leaving the FD on Sunday, yikes!)

I knew there was a reason i hate riding there. r1gladiator
Moonlighter 07-28-2004, 04:04 PM I'm usually up there 2-4 times per month, haven't seen any law up there in a long, long time. They used to regularly fly the Cessna and have ground units around, and they used to run radar from the big overlook, but I've not seen any police, besides the usual accident responses.
I think if I lived up there I'd prolly get annoyed at what some of the riders do, we all need to respect the locals and keep it real at Palomar.
With all the crashes, deaths, and resident complaints...I fully expect to turn onto the mountain and one day see either a toll gate or a big red sign that says "No Motorcycles Allowed unless you have a resident pass" or some shit. That would suck.
VoodooDsims 07-28-2004, 04:17 PM from all my reading about this place, and the negative responses i see in the press, I had a feeling this or something like it was going to happen.
I hope they catch them and :boom

R1Gladiator 07-29-2004, 08:52 AM Besides all the crashs we now have to worry about oil on the road, squids going to fast. I'm glad I don't ride Palomar anymore, just not worth it when there are plenty of other places:)

Like why would anyone go up there to be harrased by the CHP? Besides the locals hate us.
Can we blame this on the Squids? It was a Squid riding with jeans on that toke out the Harley. Or should we blame the movies like Biker Boys and Torque? Squidly movies produce Squidly riders.
:mad:really, Easy Rider and the movies that followed produced the Harley riders you see today. I don't think you can balme the Palomar locals for wanting us gone from the mountain. Would you want a bunch of sportbikes racing up and down your street? Crashing every week, medi flights, fire rescue going up and down the mountain 2 or 3 or more times a day on weekends. Heck one of the last days I was up there i was riding down the tight side to find the road closed. Yap 2 riders down and fire rescue were there helping out. A honda rider pulls up beside me, we shoot the breeze, seemed like a nice guy except he was only wearing jeans and jacket. A fire truck took back up the moutain, the road down was still closed. I decide to ride back up rather than wait and so the honda guy leads the way. He's doing pretty good, not to fast and I'm happy just to cruise up behind him. Well we come up on the fire truck with lights flashing siren blasting. So i back off it and to my surprize the honda guy pass's the fire truck, over the double yellow:scared What a squid:bs Since i did want to be mistaken for him i pulled over and went back down to wait for the road to be opened.
My advise is to stay away from Palomar. Ride Banner, Montezuma, Old Julian..much safer and less squids.:fact

I heard Mesa Grande Is full of tax collector's to, only pulling sportbikes over and one guy got a ticket for wearing ear plugs. The rider complained that they are custom ear plugs and even recited the law to the the CHP. He still got the ticket but complained to the watch commander, wrote a letter etc. Well later that day a cop shows up at his work and takes the ticket back:lol :owwn3d I'll try and find the link If you are interested?? Funny reading.
I'm going to wait until I beat my ticket before i ride again so figure a couple months from now. By than It will be a little cooler.
As far as riding areas? Ronin might have a point:lol I know heaps of places we can ride that are even better than Palomar. Just keep it quiet.
Julian? lets meet for the Dragon Convention. Who cares how many riders show up, we can still ride:riding Oct? Nov?
Moonlighter 08-01-2004, 03:21 PM I got up to Palomar at about 0930 this morning, stayed at the top till 1100 and took off to catch the races on Speed. No cops, 1 wreck, and about 40-50 bikes up there. :thumbup
George P. Buono 08-02-2004, 11:33 AM That's terrible ! I've heard of this before, I was just up there last wednesday and the road was great.I hope they catch this A-Hole. There's also the fact that many riders are treating this road like a race track, I'm not saying don't have fun but have some respect, don't pull hair ball moves, ride in control !!!!:riding :dunno Pretty soon we may not have any roads to ride.... :dunno
adrinalinjunkie 08-18-2004, 12:20 PM Thats some f-uped shiz nit...

Palomar sucks due to bikes crashing, medical flights, cops, tickets. Its OK on weekdays as the Squids are flipping burgers at "In and Out BK's".
why would you sell your 04R1? You only just bought it.:dunno When you make It back out here perhaps we can go for a spin. I know better road than Palo....secret roads..
