AUGUST 2004

I'll use this thread to detail the work I've been doing on my project bike. I know of many people that have questions about Sharkskinz R7 bodywork and other things, and I will try to detail my trials and tribulations as best I can. First off, here's a pic of it before I started. The only bodywork I retained was the front fender and tank. The 320mm Brembo discs also stayed.

Here is the bike torn down to the frame and engine. The goal was to make it look as closely to Nori Haga's 99 WSBK racer. Yea, I know that's old school, but I've wanted to do this for years, and finally got around to it. It has 11k miles, and I was time for a little TLC.

Here are all the parts sitting on the workbench. The frame, swingarm, and wheels needed to go to the powdercoater. The swingarm headed off for gusseting first. Most everything I got from eBay.....GREAT deal on the forks. The Dymags needed the gold coating stripped. Before powdercoating the frame, I filled all the screw holes with aluminum screws to keep the threads clean. BE SURE your screws aren't too long....as I was pulling some of them out, the powercoating on the threads on the opposing side made them heat up and break. Had to tap out a few stumps. I ordered all new OEM plastic wire ties and frame clamps. Wanted it done as close to new as possible. ALSO, MAKE SURE you take pictures of EVERYTHING as you pull it apart, so that you have reference material when you put it back together.....

Here's the bits and pieces the day I picked them up from the powdercoaters. SoCal Plating in National City did a great job. The wheels looked awesome, but be prepared for some of the coating to come off around the bead from mounting the tires. I just touched it up with Testors gloss black. The engine stand was a godsend. While the engine was out, I had the valves clearances checked and the seals and hoses in the coolant system replaced. At almost 11k miles of hard riding, the valves were perfect!

firehawk2003
08-09-2004, 03:52 PM
The end of a full day of work. Almost got to the wheels, but couldn't get the tires mounted in time. The bodywork mounted up no problem. The two fasteners on the lower part of the upper matched the holes perfectly. The headlight took a bit of thought. I'll get to that later.

Another view.....the pictures I took of all the electricals and engine installation before the disassembly were invaluable. Made reassembly a snap. Made sure to use a torque wrench on ALL the engine bolts!

Wheel installation complete, first time off the engine stand. Had MAJOR problems trying to get an AFAM sprocket for the Dymag....it takes a ZX-6 sprocket, and I had to order it straight from AFAM. It arrived in ONE day, no special shipping. The wheel stripes came from Tapeworks.com. EASY to install, make sure you've got a bright light and bikestands!

Here's a view of the Promach rearsets and shifter. Had to scratchbuild the shift shaft, since the sets didn't come with them. The Promach shift lever bracket mounts where the kickstand goes, ala CBR600RR. I ended up having to cut a slot in the bodywork to make it fit. Ball bearing shifter....NICE! Also, titanium abounds.....any visible external bolt I replaced with a titanium nut or bolt. I also replaced the Promach heel guard on the left with a stock C/F heelguard. The Promach was U L G Y. The stock one fits perfect. I also trimmed the sprocket guard with a dremel, and dipped it black.

R7 headlight installation. The Sharkskinz instructions are a bit vague. I had to mix and match the original hardware and some of my own hardware to make it work. I also anodized the brackets black (they come bare aluminum). You will have to drill two holes in the original headlight stay for the lower bracket. The brackets on the headlights are VERY brittle; very easy to break them off if you're not careful. The bulbs are 9005 (low beam) and 9006 (high beam), and you have to get them from an auto parts store. You will also have to get the pigtails for them (NAPA had them), and rig the wiring. On low beam, only one light will be on, and the same goes for high beam. Kinda European. I also fitted stock R1 headlight boots to seal them off. The headlights don't come with any of this stuff!!!

Headlight with the fuel collector. I fitted a tank vent into the top of the fuel tank, using a valve stem I bought at my local auto parts store. I drilled a hole, then pulled the base of the stem thru the hole using string and a knot tied underneath. Worked great! The object of the collector is to catch any overflow fuel in order for it to evaporate. One line runs in from the tank, and one runs from the collector to the overboard fuel vent line. In this pic you can also see the Black Widow damper mount (works like a charm!), Woodcraft clipons, and controls. Brembo 19x18 on the other side.

firehawk2003
08-09-2004, 04:29 PM
Here's a good view of the Flo Commander and controls. The Flo Commander went in like a snap. If you look just behind the airbox, you can see where I ran the fuel collector line to the tank vent line, and teed into it (pink hose). K&N filter sits in the airbox.....not too sure about it from all I've heard. I did the Ivan's airbox mod and installed Ivan's jets.....but the dyno will tell. Anyone out there with that setup? (stock headpipe with Devil slip-on, too...). Also installed an Indi-glo gauge face. Looked much nicer!

firehawk2003
08-09-2004, 04:35 PM
Installed a Barnett spring clutch kit with kevlar plates. Gets rid of the diaphram. I've ridden dirt bikes all my life, and I couldn't deal with the weak diaphram engagment. The kit comes with the gasket and two spring rates. The light rate is pretty stiff...hate to see the stiff rate! After the replacement, poured the usual into the case....Motul semi-synthetic. Also replaced all the cables, clutch and throttle. Nice to get the original smooth action back again!

firehawk2003
08-09-2004, 04:39 PM
Nice to be involved in aviation.....the clamp was a bennie! Fit perfectly, and it's made of stainless. Trick! (I trimmed off the excess thread). I originally had a full Devil system, but I got tired of no low end. After two years, I pitched it and went back to the EXUP! The Devil Shotgun worked as a slip-on.

firehawk2003
08-09-2004, 04:44 PM
Rear brake resevoir and Promach rearset. Bought a 2003 rear M/C off eBay that had low hours. Bolted right up. I also wanted to use the pink tubing for the resevoir, but I couldn't get it to bend nicely without kinks. Ended up using the stock hose. Also, the 2003 resevoir bolts right up to where the stock one goes. Ran into a little problem....since I had the swingarm gusseted, the brakeline had to run over the top of the swingarm and down....the stock hose wasn't long enough. Here's the best-kept secret in the world.....bonacoinc.com. Check it out! Build your own brakelines with any color covering. VERY user friendly.

bike looks great , I would have got another R1 for cheap and modded it and kept the 98' R/W original as that is the best looking of all the years . If you are intent on keeping the exup ( I am ) I would fit a 02-03 exup from a 49 state bike as they are full Ti and are good for 6 hp due to the shorter primaries and better collector and can be used with your stock exup servo. Too bad I do not have anymore modified R1 carbon slip-on ready right now as they matched the stock R7 pipe and gave the same HP as an aftermarket slip-on. Here is a pic of my R1 with the 02 exup and a modified stock can. Keep posting up your pics.

Front resevoir. Using non-adjustable Graves triple trees with 26mm offset, the front of the upper clamp has provisions for a master cylinder bracket. Of course I didn't have a bracket....time for scratchbuilding! Turned out quite nicely.

Front brake calipers. The older model R&T forks don't have the radial mounts. EMA makes a very nice kit for Brembo Goldline calipers, using an aluminum adapter and spacers for the 320's. I anodized it brown (thanks, Valentino!), and anodized the spacers black. I also bought a benchtop drill press, and drilled out all the bolts. Also drilled out all other track-required wiring points. Titanium is NO fun to drill thru. Make sure your press has a VERY slow bit speed, and use LOTS of cutting oil. High speed drilling will brake the bits everytime.

firehawk2003
08-09-2004, 04:57 PM
Getting closer.....waiting for the tail section. NO ONE makes a fiberglass stock-shaped tail section that will fit the undertail. Airtech...no. Sharkskinz....no. Sebimoto...YES!!! Fred Renz at Yoyodyne hooked me up!!!! The C/F 1998/1999 tail looks beautiful and fits nicely. Spent almost four months reciving and returning tails. Also, the sliders didn't require any drilling. The left went thru the vent hole and right bolts to the fairing mount.

firehawk2003
08-09-2004, 05:02 PM
Here's the view of the new cockpit.....the gas cap is a Pro-Tek. The thing looked like a cowboy belt buckle (too many silver screws!!) before I removed every other bolt, and inserted black metric set screws. They're flush, and look very nice. Now there's 8 silver screws instead of 16. Also stripped the paint off the throttle housing; the bare aluminum is very trick looking. Grips are Renthal soft compound. Windscreen is a Zero Gravity double bubble, smoked.

Here she is today. The bodywork goes to the painter next week. Even got OEM R7 decals, and they fit pretty closely. Started her up yesterday, and the throttle response just sitting seems much more electric. Smooth! Still need to set up the suspension front and rear, put the right side wheel stripes on, and take her to a dyno for some tuning. Bodywork should be back in two weeks!

firehawk2003

Rear hind quarter, right side. Good view of the pipe, the Yoyodyne billet rear caliper and hanger, and the gusseting. The Yoyodyne caliper hanger allows you to run a 220mm rear disc instead of the stock 245mm. The wave rotor is a Galfer. I also drilled the axle for a quick pin. I used a steel metric castellated nut, and made a lanyard that ties the pin to the top of the swingarm spool. Doesn't interfere with the stand. Love the C/F tail!!!!

firehawk2003
08-09-2004, 05:15 PM
Good view of the shift link, 520 chain and AFAM sprocket (yes, there's two sprocket nuts missing....two arrived cross-threaded from the factory!!!).

That's why it's taken me SO LONG to do this. I wanted to redo this bike four years ago, just never had the cash. The stars just aligned perfectly to make this happen. Lots of trial and error actually cost me a BUNCH :(

I just found out today that the painter is three weeks behind. Looks like I'll be waiting till September. Tore her apart in April......AAAARRRRGGGG! I wanted to do this, but I'm going to miss the whole summer.

......and a nice avatar it is! I've only been in here since March, but I notice your avatar everytime I see it. I don't know what it is about the R7 scheme that I like so much. It's almost a passion. My next goal is to actually build an R7 from race parts. Been searching the web, and I'm starting to find lots of race spares. Will take time, but I'll put in the same effort that I put into this bike! Here's another pic for the "what does it look like" crowd.

Doesn't QB Carbon make those mids? Seems like I've seen one of their showbikes with that same style fairing.

Your correct QB Carbon made them, they were used on the QB Carbon Checa R1, but unfortunately they are no longer being listed on there site/catalog, or being sold.

However, you may be able to write them, and request a set be built-up, I'm sure they still have the molds :yesnod

Sales most likely slumped after the demise of the GP 2 strokes, that is actually where the Checa R1 mids were derived from :yesnod

If you do the the later exup ($20 on ebay) you can keep the devil pipe or any other 98-01 pipe for that matter by making a little adapter like the one shown on the pool table pic that corrects the angular misalignment between the early slip ons and the later exup. The later pipe works really good and pulls to redline as opposed to the early pipe which will always have a power peak at 10,300 rpms. Great pics, keep the coming.

Can you briefly describe how you made the adapter? I was getting ready to trim a hole in the bodywork for the right side fixtures on the EXUP, but maybe the 02/03 pipe tucks in a bit better. Thanks in advance.

I was gonna build a track bike out of it, and buy an 04 R1, but I just couldn't get the R7 project out of my head. I never would have forgave myself if I never did it. Besides, the wifey has given me the green light to find a track day 600. Considering a CBR-RR or R6. Seems like R6 track bikes are on eBay all the time. :riding

any muffler shop can make you up one for $10. It is just a piece of tubing that slip fits on the header (no gasket) and has a slight bend in it (think elbow) to line up the early slip-on.

That's nice. It dropped the text. Anyway....

Got them from a guy in England on eBay. QB Carbon sells them. Look at www.worldofqbcarbon.com. Lots of good stuff.

Found out yesterday that the painter is running three weeks behind. That in conjunction with me leaving for three weeks, and I'm not going to have the bodywork done till October. I haven't ridden street since November of last year, and I'm getting a bit antzy!!!!

Also have to flush the Motul 5.1 out of the lines (thanks Rorlow and Martinc), and get them serviced back up with 4.0. After bleeding, they felt SOOO nice. Sucks to be taking steps back. Also need to have Lee's Cycle do a bit of dyno work. The pic above is of the OEM decals taped on the Sharkskinz for trimming. They fit OK, but require bunches of trimming to fit. The tank decals don't fit at all, and will need to go 1/2 on the tank and 1/2 on the lower tank fairing.

I haven't ridden STREET in a year....but here's how I'm keeping up to speed!!! :rock

Thanks for the interest!

the crank case breather line runs to your airbox (or at least on the 04 it does). so for the 04's, when your airbox gets pressurized from the ram air, so does your crankcase...which is not good. the crank vent is like a pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) valve on a car...except it works a 1000 times better. so to install, you put the crank vent inline on your crank case breather. now you can keep your c.c. breather line going to your airbox, but that is a really bad idea...the pressure in the airbox will keep the krank vent valve closed if the airbox pressure is greater than the crankcase pressure. the best thing to do is unplug the c.c. breather line from the airbox and let it vent to atmosphere, then just put a vacuum plug on your airbox to keep air from leaking (causing no pressure to build up in your airbox). in race cars, they use smog pumps to suck air out of the crank case creating negative pressure, making it easier for the engine to run and creating 10 extra hp (give or take). all the krankvent is doing is creating a 0 pressure in the c.c. it let's air out, but not in. it's basically a check valve...but a really good one. go to autozone where they have a whole wall of pcv valves and test them...every single one will leak when you blow in it. but no the krank vent, not even a little. i put an air/oil separator at the end of my c.c. breather to catch any oil that comes out. when you open up your airbox for the first time, there will be a trail of oil from where your c.c. breather line connects to the airbox. that oil is going into your # 2 and # 3 throttle bodies! gums them up over time. not good. hope this helps, elk.

Just out of curiousity, why would Yamaha do it if it were such a bad idea?

you know, i get that question a lot, and to be honest, my reply is :dunno pressure in the crankcase can cause oil blow-by and makes the engine work harder than it has to. maybe they think the engine pressure is greater than the airbox pressure, so the crankcase will still vent into the airbox even at high speeds. in any case, the best thing for the engine is a vacuum or negative pressure. since adding a smog pump to it would be more effort than what it's worth, the krankvent is the next best thing. elk.

The bike looks great. Good job. I made those radial mount caliper brackets. They look cool anodized brown. It gives them that works magnesium look. The only thing I would have done differently is to put an '02-'03 swingarm on it. It's a racier banana shape on the pipe side. I've got a couple in stock if you want to change in the future. I could even brace it up for you WSB style. The '02-'03 arm will bolt right up to the '98-'01 R1's. Nice work, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished bike.

Awesome project.

I'm in Linda Vista. I'll post here when it's done. I'll probably show it down at my father-in-laws' shop in National City (Sonny Angel Cycles) for a few days. We also do rides for the shop regulars about once a month. I'll let everyone know.

Just took the bodywork to the shop TODAY. Nice to finally get that moving. Ordered the Krankvent today, and bought a Motion Pro carb sync tool. I've had a mild idle stumble for the last 1000 miles, and I'm hoping that's the issue. Sounds like it's missing on one cylinder, but goes away above 3k. I also noticed when I had the carbs off that there was carbon build-up on top of the #1 and #4 intake valves. The thing only has 11k on it, and I did a leakdown test with good results, valves clearances checked good, so I'm assuming the carbon is normal. Hoping the sync helps. :thumbup

Thanks! I saw the brackets on the EMA site, and fell in love. I also liked the PVM's, but they told me that they require machining to fit exactly right. I REALLY would like to put Ohlins radial bottoms on to get the full effect, but this will do for now. I got the idea for the brown from Rossi's pre-season all-carbon Yamaha M1.

What do you recommend for the front fender? Without the fender brace, it was a bit loose (moving back and forth in the rubber grommets). All I did was remove the steel sleeves, and grind them down a bit. It allowed the fender screws to clamp a bit tighter. I'm just thinking that the front fender might rock back at high speeds, and touch the tire.

....of course, if I REALLY had the money, there would be Brembo monoblocks and an EMA GP swingarm on her! :thumbup

Price for an '02 with bracing?

Thanks!!!!!!

Of course, the pipe isn't mounted yet. WISH I could keep this look; very Rossi! Bodywork mounted up pretty well, lower fairing was up against the EXUP, so I fabbed a bracket that pushed it away, and bought a stick-on heat shield.

Sexy shot....

Couldn't decide up until the day I was done whether or not I liked the wheel stripes. The new all-black R6 is coming with them, and they're a must have for GP replicas. I like them, but I also like the all-black look with the wheels, frame, ect.

Also, check out the access area behind the butt-pad. I screwed in a "modified" square Tupperware bowl inside the cowling, and glued non-skid padding inside it. The fairing hole is covered by the butt-pad, held on by heavy-duty Velcro! Works great!

First run in the books.

Only thing that worked loose was the stem nut. Simple fix. Went slow early on, then ran her in a bit. Unbelievable difference with the mag wheels and Ohlins bits. She holds a line like never before. Still needs a bit of dyno work and suspension tuning.

That's all. My 8 month saga has finally come to a close. Still want other race bits for her, including a larger radiator and a bit more engine work, but this will have to do for now. Thanks for looking!!!!

I meant to say something earlier, but I found a really good spot to mount the Ohlins shock adjuster (if someone else has done this....I apologize. I thought it was unique!)

I removed the lock for the rear seat, and it left a big hole in the plastic. I simply routed the shock adjuster up the right side, under the seat, over the top of the battery, and out the other side. I drilled three holes, and bolted it right up! Nice thing is, I can take my left hand off to turn it. I don't hit it with my leg, either. Just a tip if it hasn't been done before.

Thanks for the wonderful comments! Felt awesome hitting the road with her. LOVE the doubletakes!

To say you did a good job is an understatement! I've had a fascination with the R7 as well - gave up trying to aquire the bits to piece one together - and you have done a fantastic job with your R1!

Here's a thought - you'd mentioned you wished you didn't have to put the exhaust slip-on back on the bike because you liked the look of it wihout a slip-on - have you thought of building a Mirage-type exhaust?

I think the shotgun exhaust and the rim-tape look kick-a$$. Wish I was in you neck of the woods so I could see it in person. Again, GREAT JOB!!

You have a website or any pictures? Is it an undertail exhaust?

Judge Dredd
10-26-2004, 10:46 AM
You can search the forums here for MCM exhaust, or Mirage, or home made exhaust. Here is the website that inspired all the copies: www.mcmcustom.com

Basically it is a baffle with an exhaust tip bolted to it, and it slides in the pipe where the slip on attaches so all that is showing is the exhaust tip poking out from behind the lower fairing. It looks great ( personally I'd have a black tip, not chrome) but some guys here have said it is a very loud setup. I'm in the process of starting to build my own.

Feel free to email me or pm me if you want to discuss it. I think I've read everything on the forum here about it and I can give you my opinion. I'm also building mine a little bit differently than the guys here have.

Thanks, Rorlow! I was hoping it was some kind of undertail exhaust. Not many I've seen that I like. There's just something about the pipe out the side! Seems like undertail is the new thing, but storage/heat issues abound. I'll be sticking with my shotgun.

Just my opinion, but anything other than a side exit on an R7/R71, would look out of place, and detract from the classic R7 look/era :yesnod

I took a look at that website just for the hell of it.....looks like an R1 ran over a semi. Can't imagine that having oil blow-by and a pipe exit that close to the rear tire could be a good thing...that pipe HAS to be loud. I even got on eBay and looked at Akro slip-ons....I still think I'm happy with what I've got. Thanks for the input, Rorlow. I was really looking forward to what you had to say about the final product.

By the way.....as a side note, I got 10mm and 6mm hose from Fred; neither has developed any kind of sweat at all, after two months bled. Must have gotten some of the "good" batch!

Well........

This is for anyone following this thread. Figured I'd put up the latest pics of her. After getting two tickets in December, and the patrols on Montezuma increasing, I thought it was about time to "take it to the track". Done three trackdays since January, and have two next month. Dipped into the mid-1:40's at California Speedway (AMA track). Of course, Maladin turned a 1:24 in tire testing...... :scared

I ran the Vegas Classic course in March, and absolutely shreaded a BT-002 soft in one day. Found out from looking at my pictures that the rear of the bike was sagging like a big dog. A bit of suspension rebuilding by PPS Suspension (thanks, Stig!) fixed that. Also, dropped the EXUP (again....) and the Devil Shotgun, and went with a full Akra. Holy BEJEESUS! What the hell was I doing! The power increases are incredible. Little bit of Dyno work got me at 141.1 at the rear wheel. Not bad for a 1998 with 11,000 miles! Now, if I could only shoehorn in an '04 engine....

I also added Gilles chain adjusters, Gilles lifters, and an R7 race upper. She's a track bike now. A bit more work to the engine, and I'll truly be happy.

See you Cali guys (and whoever else makes it to Fontana) on May 2nd!!!!

firehawk2003~ I can certainly understand why you'd make her an all track bike. It's nice to ride on the street but unfortunately with so much power under our rearsides it's hard not to creep towards (and subsequently pass) triple digits. That said, awesome job in making the thread and the rebuild. Best of luck! :thumbup

Nice man....you had the same color bike I have before you did all that work. 141rwhp is not bad, I only have 130rwhp on mine with 27k miles. How does the new exhaust feel compared to your old devils? What kinda hp difference did you make switching exhaust? I have a MIG high mount on mine now, was thinking about switching exhaust also

I'm now running a Ivan's jet kit, full Akra, airbox mod, BMC filter, Flo Commander, NGK Irridium plugs, and 520 chain/magnesium wheels.

The power gains at the throttle with the Akra were incredible. I never dyno'd the Devil, but I CAN tell you the slip-on with the EXUP had to be robbing even stock horsepower levels. I really didn't know what I was missing.

Put it this way; there is a 180 degree hairpin on the California Speedway AMA track. I exit in 2nd gear and just grab 4th before the down shift into the next left hander. I can hold the front wheel off the ground thru 2nd and 3rd on the exit, just from power alone. Last trackday, I damn near highsided there twice. :scared

Akra is the way to go.....:thumbup

nice....yeah I just added the ivans jet kit last night, but I don't know what I need to do now, its running really rich 10:1 a/f ratio pretty much across the board, someone told me to put the clip on the needle 1 notch higher, then another said go with smaller jets, my 130rwhp/71rwtq is with this bad a/f ratio. My next step is to add velocity stacks. The air box mod you listed, is that the Ivans air box mod? If so how do you like it? and when you say EXUP do you mean adding a newer EXUP or taking it off all together? Sorry for all the questions, your just putting out nice numbers for what you have and thats where I want to be:riding

Here's the latest mods to my R71 project. I thought I'd update my old thread, but I think I'll finally just let it die.

I started riding it on the street after I initially finished it, but that proved to be two tickets too many. I did my first track day in February, and I haven't turned back since. The R7 headlights and upper came off, and a race upper went on. Decided to tackle the paintjob myself....thanks DuPont!

Amazing how many things seem functional on the street, and don't work on the track. The suspension was horribly undersprung, and one trip to Stig and PPS Suspension fixed that. I also discovered the rear brake was dragging, victim of improper shimming. The rotor was 4mm, and Fred at Yoyodyne said the Yoyodyne caliper had a 4mm clearance! Needless to say, the shimming had to be spot-on.

I finally ditched the Devil Shotgun, and went with a full Akra. I also dropped the 132.5 mains in. I'm still not totally happy with the power, but it's way better than it was. Really starting to realize that I have motor work in my future.

I've ridden Bridgestones my whole riding career, and I gave Dunlops a shot. I bought a set of 208GP-A's. At California Speedway, I had a couple of near-highsides, but at Vegas Classic last weekend, they were SWEET. Might stick with them.

Dropped in titanium axles, titanium swingarm pivot, and magnesium nuts. Thanks Bryan!

I'm starting to feel phase two of this project coming on. I want to fit monoblocks, lower radial bottoms, a full race radiator (or at least something that runs cooler!), and of course engine work. Might even pick up a set of 10-spoke wheels....not sure yet. As I get more confident on the track, I also feel a race bike coming on! Haven't made up my mind between an R6 or ZX-6R.....

Ron, I took this one for you. I know how you were dealing with clear brakelines for awhile....how about this setup! I took the stock plastic elbow for the reservoir, sliced it off, and ground the flange smooth. Then I drilled out the hole so that the sawed off part would fit vertically, and sealed it. I did this because of how lousy the hose clearance was past the subframe. I couldn't keep it from kinking. This way, I've got a straight shot to the reservoir. Also I used 6mm and 10mm tubing, and spliced it with a section of aluminum tubing. Finally, I clamped everything with safety wire. No leaks or sweating yet!

The tank breather worked out fairly well. It's just a valve stem, sealed with rubber gaskets and silicone. No leaks yet. I ran the tube down behind the engine, and teed into the original tank vent lines.

Nope. If you clean up the gearing and jetting (98 mind you...), she makes plenty of power. Actually, when I put the Akra on and matched the carbs to it, I gained midrange. She feels strong throughout the powerband.

Guys that bitch about losing power, just bolt the pipe on and never spend time getting everything sorted out. Dyno time and a good tuner costs money.....

yup...what he said.

played HELL trying to find someone that made them too...i ordered them from EMA back in June, and I just got them last week. only other manufacturer that makes them is Harris....and don't even think about trying to get in contact with them. Besides, I got these brackets for $495...Harris wants $800 for the same thing. 100mm ones are pretty easy to find. I thought about just doing a fork bottom conversion, but the Ohlins conversion kit has no provisions for mounting a fender...you have to custom fab brackets. Also, I thought about replacing the forks with newer radial versions, but i spent so much money on these with PPS getting them dialed in, sprung, valved....that it made no sense.

private vendor in england. got the rad for cheap, but shipping made up for it. good fit and finish. i fabbed a bracket for the OEM water catch bottle, and there's no provisions for a cooling fan. wouldn't fit between the rad and the headers anyway. looking to maybe install a small fan at the bottom, but she still runs about 170 constant without one.

Took her to Buttonwillow Raceway yesterday to turn a few laps for a photographer. Wanted updated pics to go with the bike to Long Beach in December for the Cycle World show. Instead of taking it easy and just running a few smooth laps, I started putting my head down and gettin on it. Now, I've put over 10K on this bike, and over 80K between my other bikes, and to date, I've only crashed once. Last one was at Willow in T3 on smoked out Dunlops. I should have seen that coming. I KNOW my bike, and I've been thru the same corner dozens of time. This time, she broke loose, almost like the track was greasy. Rear end broke to the left, kicked back right, and high-sided left. The bike tumbled about 100 feet before coming to rest. I was sliding in a way that I could see the last 50 feet....and watched her go end over end twice. I wanted to puke. My first instinct was to wave down the other riders; once I had a clear track, I pushed her off the race line and waited for the crash truck. She wouldn't roll, because the rear Marchesini wheel had exploded, with 1/2 the rim on the right side separating from the bike.

I'm fine, twisted ankle, bit of rash on the right elbow, and sore shoulder. Also destroyed my used 4 times Edwards RX-7 Arai. Took two shots to the head, and never saw stars. Slight scuffs on my Joe Rocket Speedmaster suit....very impressed how it survived the slide.

Well, the rebuild begins. The show is in two months, and I'm already making a laundry list of parts. I'll be scrubbing the classifieds daily for a few things, and most importantly, these two:

~ Marchesini 5-spoke rear for a 98-01, white, black, chips, doesn't matter. I'll be powdercoating it.

~ Akrapovic carbon fiber can (must be MINT)

Let me know if anyone has or knows someone that has these parts.

Enjoy the pics. :riding

sucks mark :( At least you're okay and you know you enjoy building it as much as you do riding it :) It's part of the hobby...sucks it's more expensive then a crack addiction though.

Here's what I have in store....

Since I don't want to do an exact rebuild on the 98, I'm going to update the frame/tank/tail to 2000/2001 spec. The motor, swingarm, and triples will bolt right up. She's going to look a little different. Already found a company in Italy that sells an entire Haga R7 decal kit, complete with sponsor decals, for $300. The Sharkskinz R71 upper is for a 98-01, so it will bolt right up. All in all, I think the ball is going to start rolling fast.

I already told a few people that I will most likely not have the paint done in time for the cycle show. So, I'm going to primer the upper black, and with the black lower (came thru unscathed), carbon tail, carbon front fender, black frame and swingarm, and I also just bought a set of Brembo HP rotors with special black carriers. I think it will look incredible. I'm just going to put a few pics of the crash with the bike....and call it a work in progress.

Do you have any of your bits left, or did you sell everything?

i crashed 2 years ago now ,so most pics you would have seen of my bike are of the rebuilt version. the busted bits i threw out, and i still have some other random bits, but only factory stuff.

sorry about the crash. however, someone on here is selling a 5 spoke marc for a 02-03 r1.

I think that guy wants $1500 for both front and rear. I only need a rear. And, I got the set I have now for $800, and reconditioned them myself. If you're talking about someone else, please let me know. Thanks ;)
