02R1Phreak 07-20-2002, 11:25 PM ok ok also on Thursday i did a top speed run.... my mods are as follows, Akro slip on and PCIII . I hit 181mph but hit shift light i beleive.... i think if i kept on goin i could hit 185 or so. Does this sound about right and what have you guys hit? thanks guys
martinc 07-20-2002, 11:45 PM most r1 have the ability to reach 189 indicated.
INDICATED,i repeat,INDICATED for those that want to re-re-re-re-re-start the debate on real speed.
JoeRocket [R1] 07-20-2002, 11:59 PM Took mine to 165 Indicated. It gets to 140 quick but after that, it took much longer. Didn't have the balls or the road to keep pushing it. Where do you all live? In hicksville? Nah.....too much road kill.. :p
02R1Phreak 07-21-2002, 11:17 AM I am in Seattle....... wide open freeway is where i did my run
R1RIDER 07-21-2002, 11:26 AM 167 is the fastest Ive gone acording to the speedometer
Gulf Coast R1 07-21-2002, 12:28 PM I got to 186 indicated a couple of weeks ago. The needle was just touching redline on the tach. I didn't think that was too bad for a 6' 3" 220 lb guy. It's pretty hard to tuck in when you're my size.
R1Ryd3R 07-21-2002, 01:04 PM ahhh come on dude, I'm 6'5" 260-270 lbs and I got my bike to 189..
A freind has it on cam if you wanted me to post, but it's bad video quality........:boobies
Gulf Coast R1 07-21-2002, 01:53 PM No need for video dude. I believe you. I guess I could probably squeeze I few more mph out of her. I live in the dirty south and it is humid as hell down here. Probably could get a better top speed on a cooler day.
Be safe!!:rock
JoeRocket [R1] 07-22-2002, 02:19 AM Dude, I'm in Seattle.....
There is no such thing as wide open freeway in Seattle. Be careful out here. I just saw a fellow rider dead on the freeway that wiped out at excessive speed. The bike was bent in half?!?!?!:bash :bash :bash
02R1Phreak 07-22-2002, 07:27 PM Joe your right bud.... but the I-90 bridge deck in carpool lane around 9pm...... pretty wide open bud... and its like a mile stretch across the water......
TITANIUMR1 07-23-2002, 03:30 PM I did 186mph indicated. Finally.........people who know and believe my top speed stories!:)
rippinfast 07-23-2002, 03:47 PM i'm doing a gps run this weekend. starting at 45 mph then 60 and so on. then top speed on a 5 mile dead straight 4 lane. i will post. my guess on top speed is 175 actual. speedo sucks.
JAYSTENSEC4CYL 07-23-2002, 09:02 PM I have seen 193 on my speedo, thats 168 real life MPH if my math is good.
JoeRocket [R1] 07-23-2002, 10:58 PM I didn't think of I90. That is pretty good during certain times of the day.
:thumbup
adamgeek 07-29-2002, 07:25 AM 02R1Phreak and JoeRocket.. i'm in seattle as well.
I went down to portland last week, and saw a tad over 180 [indicated] on a straight stretch of I-5... and she definitely had more to give. IIRC 5th gear pulled to around 173, and then i clicked into 6th (although i don't think i ran 5th all that deep into redline).
I'd be wary of the i-90 bridge because 1: it's not THAT long, and 2: there're a TON of crosswinds coming off of the water. Crosswinds + 180mph = bad times.
If either of you are interested in riding anytime, just lemme know (contact info in my profile), i'm always looking for an excuse to get out of the apartment :D
choistr 07-29-2002, 07:53 AM Mine indicated 178mph:eek: behind the Crest (Los Angeles) in Palmdale....I was on the street called Mt. Emma 4 mile strecth....mine redlined in 6th and couldn't get any more out of my baby.
Mattias1 07-29-2002, 10:02 AM 288 km/h, that's 179 of your mph. There was more to be squeezed out, but I just wanted to break my old record of 287 km/h...
JAYSTENSEC4CYL 07-29-2002, 06:19 PM Weight does not effect top speed. Top speed is limited by Gearing, Horse Power, Aerodynamic Drag, and sometimes traction. Weight can effect how quickly a vehicle can get to it's top speed, but not it's actual top speed.
On the R1 it's all about tucking in as tight as possible. Get your butt back against the rear seat (so the air has a smoother flow over your back). Wear tight fitting leathers / clothing. If it's flapping in the wind it is causing drag. Get your head all the way down (easier if you have an aftermarket screen as the stock one sucks) and keep your arms and legs in tight against the bike.
Happy flying:)
johnb@microsoft 08-06-2002, 09:03 AM Hmm, weight / mass DOES affect how much energy is required doesn't it? I would think a heavier bike / person would be at a deficiet at top speed due to that, although it would be negligible. TIME to speed would be more drastically affected though ...:machinegu
liextreme.com 08-06-2002, 10:20 AM from liextreme DVD
adamgeek 08-06-2002, 02:05 PM johnb, weight is a factor in top speed, although a fairly neglibigble one. weight mostly affects accelleration, although it will add increased friction onto the tires, which would lower your top end a small amount. but, provded your CD is the same on each run, a fat guy and a skinny guy would both achieve "nearly" the same top speed.. imho.
and liextreme.. i think you posted that image to the wrong thread.. unless 136mph is your top speed? lol.
JAYSTENSEC4CYL 08-06-2002, 02:15 PM Weight has not effect on top speed, unless your a gravity racer. Top speed is limited by gearing , HP, and drag.
Weight affects acceleration, braking, and handeling, but not top speed. If it did the Busa would weigh 12 lbs...lol The busa and ZX12 are all about HP, Drag, and gearing, not weight. Even if an R1 had 163 RW HP like a busa I do not think it could pull 190mph, the aero is not as good on the R1 as it is on the Busa and ZX12.
Montster01 08-07-2002, 04:38 PM alright I might catch some shit for this but I got to try to prove a point! I grew up in Western Nebraska on a ranch that was about 40 square miles in area, we had about 3000 head of black angus cattle, every year we would take them to the sell barn which is about 70 miles away. now I was pulling an alluminum stock trailer with a dodge extended cab diesel dually with six-speed, and a two speed splitter. now going over to the sale barn I could only squeeze about 80 out of it, but coming back empty would break 100 easy, and also I had a 1999 ford lightning for a while, top end was at about 143, because the lightning is shaped like a barn door its 360 horses will only take it that fast but with more ponies it will push air a little faster.
Gage151 08-07-2002, 04:51 PM Weight does effect top speed. tires will have more weight on them causing more friction causing less top speed. So in other words gravity wins again.
rippinfast 08-07-2002, 05:07 PM done. the verdict is....... 168 dead wind, 93 degrees, approx. 75% humidity. all 12 satellites hooked up. i couldn't figure out how to hold a number other than top speed. indicated was 192. thought i saw 12000 on the tach but poor wind protection makes your eyes rattle even in a full tuck. all the technology and we can't get an accurate speedo. anybody know if there is a solution like an electronic speedo calibrator for the 02? sorry if this has been beat to death but i haven't been around long. thanks
JAYSTENSEC4CYL 08-09-2002, 02:11 PM The vehicles aerodynamics will have a greater effect on the "weight" the tires are seeing than the vehicles actual weight.
JAYSTENSEC4CYL 08-09-2002, 02:16 PM After reading IVAN's comments on his airbox mod, I changed my jetting and added my K&N filter. (I already had the airbox mod a year ago) My bike will pull clean to redline in 6th every time now, at an indicated 193mph. I have a 1 tooth smaller front sprocket and the stock rear sprocket. Before the jetting change it would not do this.
littlebigdenny 08-09-2002, 07:52 PM saw stock 02 at mid-ohio on dyno; 144.6 hp 184mph indicated,170mph
turnone 08-10-2002, 12:00 PM ive hit 99 on my bike...still breaking her in though..ill take it up higher when i get some time on it..im not one to ring out a bike thats new... not good for it at all
Gage151 08-13-2002, 12:18 PM i have waited to post until i had a decent speed to put in here, up until lastnight the best I had was 160, so I had a little more room and guts in the dark on the (lit)freeway to take it to 170. not satisfied though. i was in 5th gear by the way and still had room to go on my bone stock 02' as of now.
