: • For immediate release: Kryptonite U-lock easily defeated
Eyespy 09-15-2004, 06:56 PM Forgive me if this is a repost. Did not find this topic on a search. Everyone who relies on the U-Locks must be made aware of this before the bad guy gets your bike, because they certainly know about it...

Damn, thanks for the heads up!
aaron_mahnken 09-15-2004, 09:05 PM Gee and I thought all they did was either freeze it and then hit the lock to break it. Or stick a jack under the lock if you left some slack and break it.
OneWhoKnows 09-15-2004, 09:15 PM *buys stock in Bic* :(

Me and a friend have 2 of those worthless things, where do we send them off to? A focking pen, I don't believe it. I thought they at least had to work a little for it, but a pen?
korrupt1 09-16-2004, 01:06 AM if ya use the second link provide and read down through the thing they provide some info as to where to go once Kryptonite has cured the problem
Crimson Rush 09-16-2004, 01:20 AM thanks :thumbup

What kind of loock is this?? The only markings and writing for that matter reads "OTSOD". I got it about 9yrs ago when working at a local Yammie dealer. If I'm not mistaken, it was the Tucker Rocky rep that brought some in, but I'm not sure if they ever carried it for mass sales. It's not light, but I'll be damned if it'll be removed without the key.

I don't think they have a choice. If they didn't 'care' it would turn into the proverbial "PR nightmare" for them. That would be bad for business and people would stop purchasing their products.
Xylic 09-16-2004, 06:36 AM "Nobody here thinks that may have been fixed..errr...rigged..like the lock was open already?"
NOPE! I went to my yamaha dealership yesterday and they all thought I was nuts till I had one of them do it right there on the showroom floor. He had it opened in about 10 seconds.
dr.r1 09-16-2004, 07:29 AM WOW! Good thing I never used those. I would be pretty pissed if I had my bike stolen due to a lock like that.
BckNtheGme 09-16-2004, 07:33 AM Welllllllllllll....clintb is offended...as I was really referring to how small the lock looked in the picture!
That's amazing some guy did it in front of you in 10 secs!
Let's all try and be just a little more laid back please!
Sorry clintb...my bad....but I am still in disagreement with your take on what a pro is?!:dunno

R1Budha 09-16-2004, 11:01 AM Kryptonite locksd have been easily defeated for years........
by merely spraying anytype of refrigerant onto the inside of the lock cylinder, you could then merely smack the other side of the lock and the cylinder would pop out.
I've done it myself to prove it to the Kryptonite factory rep.
:fact
madmathew 09-16-2004, 01:13 PM I tried to do this last night and I couldn't get mine open. I have a chain and lock setup. The lock is more on a standard style with shrouds that come up around the top. I had to heat the pen up and expand its diameter a little to get it to fit over the center pin. Am I doing it wrong or is my lock different from these?:dunno
martinc 09-16-2004, 02:03 PM I tried it on my DOGO disc lock,my Oxford magnum u-lock and my 21 yrs old kryptonite u-lock and nope...the Bic pen trick doesnt work...in fact,it doesnt fit in at all.

All I can say is DAMN!!!
Aight. I just tried this and it didn't work. The pen was too small and didnt fit over the cylinder. Maybe they fixed the problem? This was on a disk lock...
Novi357 09-16-2004, 08:06 PM Aaaaand now it is all over the internet.
korrupt1 09-16-2004, 08:20 PM people it only worked on the U lock and the newer styles at that.
disc locks barrel style and etc...were not included in any way
and Budha is right...you can freeze ANY lock and smash it to bits
lets put it this way...if a thief wants something of yours bad enough...he's gonna get it one way or the other.
all we can do is buy as much protection as possible and HOPE that it is failsafe(which nothing is)
PowerJunkie 09-16-2004, 09:10 PM Hey guys, I’d like to add a couple of things.
I apologize in advance if I’m hyper analyzing things.
1st, that finding where the end of a bic pen will pick that lock is NOT that surprising… and I’ll tell you why; You’re basically picking the lock, or raking the lock, to align the wafers in the tumbler just right to get it to turn. The wafers are the metal pins that you can depress, and if you line them up just right within the tumbler the lock will turn and open the lock. And when I say “align them just right” it’s good to know (or bad to know) that your tolerance on that is wide open. Specifically, you need to apply turning pressure in the direction that the lock opens, while moving the wafers in the tumbler. By applying pressure, it will hold the wafer in place once it is set. Once any given wafer settles in to position, you can feel and hear it if you pay attention. You move to the next wafer and set it in until the lock is ultimately compromised. That is picking. What they were doing in the videos was raking. When you “rake” a lock, you are applying pressure and hitting all the wafers at once. It’s a push turn release.. push turn release.. push turn release.. until you get lucky and the lock pops. And when I say “lucky” I mean most people can get lucky like that very quickly.
You’ve all heard that a lock only keeps an honest person honest. If someone wants to get through your security device bad enough it will happen. I would not be discouraged from using disk locks and such. Use your head and common sense when you are locking your stuff down. Even the simplest of locks is a good theft deterrent because they take time to get through and a thief HATES taking time to get your stuff. I only know these things because I spent a little time repossessing and was trained by a very good locksmith how to take out just about any lock. I can get through (pick) pad locks, household deadbolts, toolboxes, motorcycle ignition switches… I can impression keys from the outside of a car that will work in the ignition in very little time. I only say this to scare the hell out of you guys. Key locks as we know them today are very weak links.
Don’t be afraid to use these theft deterrents, just be aware. Think about what you have and don’t forget to use it.
Ummm yeah. I just grew up dealing with this . I used to steal cars, bikes, whatever I could get my hands on and make some money on, A cordless drill and bit was usually all it took for a padlock. U lock, some big ass bolt cutters... Car ignitions, A big slide hammer... Nothing is undefeatable. As long as a person knows how it works it can be beat. Alarms are usefull because they make noise. But if u cut the norn U most likely have all the time in the world. Nothing is failsafe. My boys bike got stolen About a month ago with a lock on it. Remember 450 lbs. is not hard to lift when there are 2 or 3 guys...

Are you talking about the ones like in the picture where the lock is not at the end of the straight tube? More directly under the locking bar? :dunno
I have a Kryptonite that's about 20 years old, and am curious if it is subject to it. I know you can buy "Dogbonez" and other things to make the u-locks more secure. Even if the freezing trick bypasses all of it... :(

KRYPTONITE OFFERING FREE UPGRADE WORLDWIDE FOR CONSUMERS’ HIGH END TUBULAR CYLINDER LOCKS
Unprecedented Offer Intended to Address the Needs of Loyal Consumers
Canton, MA September 17, 2004 - Kryptonite today announced it will provide free product upgrades for certain locks purchased since September 2002, in response to consumer concerns about tubular cylinder lock technology. Consumers can visit the company’s Website (www.kryptonitelock.com) on Wednesday afternoon, September 22, 2004, to learn how they can participate in the security upgrade program.
Consumers who have purchased an Evolution lock, KryptoLok lock, New York Chain, New York Noose, Evolution Disc Lock, KryptoDisco or DFS Disc Lock in the last two years are eligible for a product upgrade free of charge from Kryptonite. Customers will need to have either registered their key number, registered for the Kryptonite anti-theft protection offer or have proof of purchase to qualify.
Specifically, Kryptonite will provide for free cross bars featuring the company’s new disc-style cylinder lock technology to consumers who have purchased Evolution and KryptoLok series products. In addition the company will replace for free recently purchased Evolution Disc Locks on New York Chain and New York Noose with its “Molly Lock”, a heavy duty solid steel padlock. Kryptonite also will upgrade recently purchased disc locks.
Consumers who have had one of the Kryptonite locks mentioned with a tubular cylinder for longer than two years will be eligible for a sizeable rebate on the upgraded products. This program will be administered through Kryptonite dealers and distributors.
A distributor and dealer swap program will be rolled out through direct communication from Kryptonite to all its partners.
Full details about this unprecedented program will be available on Kryptonite’s website by afternoon Eastern Standard Time, Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at www.kryptonite.com

They are exchanging locks. No cost to the consumer. Not even shipping.
It appears that Kryptonite is going to stand up and do the right thing.

Phimic! 09-24-2004, 11:42 AM That sucks man !!
Mark618 12-16-2004, 10:40 PM Today , after three months, several e-mails and some phone calls, I received a replacement lock for the EV Disc Lock that I bought last year. It's called an EV 2000 and has a different type lock and key.
On their own initiative, Kryptonite also replaced two big u-locks that I bought in the 1980s. In their place, they sent two New York MC locks.
I consider that Kryptonite did the right thing in this affair and I won't hesitate to spend my money with them in the future.
P.S. I may sell one of the New York MC locks, since I don't need it. If you are interested, back channel me or keep an eye on the For Sale Forum.

I'm a locksmith/safecracker. Been one for 12-13 years. I own my own company for the past 5. There are many different methods to gain access quickly with the right knowledge I choose not to disclose. Seconds pretty much is all it takes. I could easily look at your key and cut/file you one while you hold it. Thats pretty sickening if you really think about it. Just be aware and not careless is all I have to say. Look out for each other. Ride Safe, Peace!
