OK, I may have a problem. Topped off the tank (about $2-$3) last weekend at Amaco. My buddy and I both used the same pump and his bike broke down about 2 miles aftere we left the station. We were out of state and a friend of his kept the bike in his garage. On monday the guy took it to a local bike mechanic and the mechanic said the tank was filled with deisal gas.

I made it home no problem (about 60 miles) but haven't ridden since. I know for sure I used the pump with the gold handle which is their highest octane gas Amoco has or is supposed to be. My thing is either the mechanic is lying or the gas station had the high octane tank filled with deisal by accident.

Would i have made it home with deisal gas and what can be some negative effects on a FI bike??

I'm dumping the tank tomorrow anyway just to be safe. What other steps should i take?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

If you had diesel in it you should not have made it home but gas and diesel don't mix they will seperate so drain the tank and fill with super unleaded and add a bottle of Chevron Techron to it and you should be ok.

Thanks twisted, i have a feeling the mechanic is pulling my buddies chain.

I plan on dumping the tank 1st thing in the am. I'll look for that Techron stuff.

Again thanks

I've encountered that problem before and this is what I did; I pumped out the diesel gas, filled it back up with the highest octane and octane booster, replaced the fuel filter, and dumped in some carbonator cleaner, in your case fuel injection cleaner. Everything should be fine after that.

Call the gas station and complain (got reciept?) I'm sure several people filled up off of this pump, and you are prob not the first to complain on needing a new motor!!;)

A small amount of diesel will actually clean your engine out really good. I know some diesel mechanics and they said running diesel in a gasoline engine for just a couple of minutes will clean the engine out like you wouldn't believe! I have yet to try this though, I think I will stick with a bottle of fuel injector cleaner instead.

Well I dumped the tank this morning. Got it all out except for about 4-8oz that I couldn't get out without some type of pump. Pulled out a little under 2 gallons of gas. It looked and smelled like regular gasoline but who knows, the fumes had me high after about 60seconds.

Went to the gas station and put in 93octane and injector cleaner. Put about 60miles on it so far with no problems. :rock I'll be putting more on this evening if it doesn't rain.

I seriously think the mechanic is jacking off my buddy but he doesn't seem to want to believe me. I bet it was something simple wrong with the bike and the mechanic is trying to make some extra $$$.So far my buddy is in the whole $180, and that's only for labor. Can't wait to see what he'll be charging for the parts.

I saved the gas and will be using it in my lawnmower. If that ****er dies I don't really give a shit.

Again thanks to all for the help!! Your all a bunch of great people!!

Glad to hear your bike is still running fine!

I was wondering though, aren't the nozzles on diesel pumps a different size than regular pumps? I've never filled a diesel up so I can't be sure, but I thought they were different sizes so you can't make a mistake at the gas station???

Yeah...diesel pumps are supposed to have a larger filler tube. But that wouldn't help out if these guys had diesel in the high octane tanks. :no

From what I have seen you would have had a lot a sputtering and smoke and then dead. Of course, depending on the ratio of diesel to unleaded you had in the bike it could be different. If you had majority diesel you wouldn't have made it home. As mentioned above just a good flush should be ok. Doesn't sound like you really had diesel in it. How much do you think you put in?

A small amount of diesel will actually clean your engine out really good.

We used to do that back home to our cars. Every once in a while dump a quart of diesel fuel in the gas tank. It seemed to work.

Don't ask me how this happened( It is too embarrassing to repeat) But I had a fuel tank filled on a truck with about 5 gallons of diesel fuel. This I know from experience, change the oil and filter!! Diesel fuel does not burn in a gas engine. It goes through the rings, and ends up in the crankcase. I had about a gallon of diesel in the crankcase of my engine, and diesel does not make a good lubricant. Drain the oil, and change the filter, and you should be fine!!:rock
