R1 keep or upgrade
I'm stuck in a hard place. Kinda want to see what others here would do.
I have a 04 R1. No complaints, paid off, just a damn good bike.
I like to upgrade to a bmw s1000rr that is a couple yrs old.
Should I keep on dumping mod money into the R1 or save the cash for a nice down payment on the bmw?
Keep in mind I am just a street rider and the R1 keeps me smiling but something about the performance of the bmw that lures me in.
The only track days that interest me are motox with the family.
Having both is not an option. What would you do?

Really depends on what you expect. Would you be planning on modding the S1000RR if you got one? If so that's more money into the pot that you could've use on your R1 now and you would still be paid off. BMW cool bike great reviews but to make another financial commitment when you could easily wow yourself again with your bike. It's a no brained for me. I'd MOD the hell out of the R1!

If its just street riding, it's preference. Whichever looks better to you, I'd buy.
The longer you sit on the 04 the less it's worth, but the pice of used BMW's will also decline.
Personally I'd mod the r1, but I hate the BMW front end

what would be the point in the bmw other than having something new? if u are only a dstreet rider you will NEVER even come close to the potential of either bike... ive rode one and it was stupid fast but i wasnt that comfortable on it... same thing with the 12 r1... i like my 03 best... just wish it had the power of the 04-06

Stuff doesnt make anyone happy. That is reality. But we are fooled into thinking and encouraged through the media, our friends, and our ego's to never be happy with our stuff and always want more and better stuff. Its a never ending cycle.
What I'm trying to say is your ego motivating you to 'upgrade' or is it because its a practical decision? Do you want to start making payments again?
I was very close to buying a new bike this year. Then I realized I really love my 06. I decided I'll just keep riding this until it falls apart, and by that time I'll be able to pay cash for a new bike. I realized buying a new bike was just to impress my friends.
But if you think a new BMW will be worth it go ahead with those payments and interest. Its the American way. Buy things you cant afford and don't need, so you can impress people you don't know.

Actually I'm sorry I need to make a correction to my last post. Even though the BMW will be a couple years old the maintenance on them is higher priced as well as certain parts. For me it's a cool bike but it is your opinion that counts the most.

I'm not sure if he's financing it or not but the BMW he wrote is a couple years old. Still I agree with you. Enjoy what you have not what you want!

paid off is piece of mind. dont get yourself involved in any more debt when you own an r1 already, i mean really how much faster r u gonna be going on the street on s1000rr than a r1, ride that bitch into the ground lol

lol......i was there 2 months ago...i also have a 04 r1 and asked the same question. i ended up getting a aprilia rsv4!! its tuff i love my r1 but my new bike is amazing!! im supposed to sell my r1 but i havent had the balls to post it yet. having both isnt a option either....my payment is 233 a month. the factory is such a sweet ride. whats nice is my son is a born rider and hes been riding my r1 and we go for rides together!!

I love love love motorcycling. Doesnt matter what the weather is I ride ride ride.
The key here is I love motorcycling, not motorcycles. I bet you could put me on a beat up old 1980's sportbike and my smile will be bigger then a guy riding a BMW s100rr hp4.

I think the R1 would offer all the thrills of the S1000RR would on the street. If you can keep out of debt, would be the sensible choice for these tough economic times we are currently in.

Mod R1 = YOUR bike
Stock S1K = everyone else the same
The S1K for 2012 has sorted many issues. I wouldn't consider the initial gen S1K. Rode it and didn't like it. Not for street. Uncomfortable.
2012 S1K is really nice. But that's debt written all over.
R1 is sexy, and u can spend little bits and pieces and make it your own R1. And she hauls ass too. Great for street IMHO.

here's what i said to someone else in your shoes: Keep it. The key is replacing parts that will dramatically alter the personality of the bike. I blew the engine on my 06...I was debating selling it for something new like the KTM RC8 or the s1000rr. I ride as much as I can to work and on the weekends; but honestly I just couldnt justify spending more money in a recession than i need to. So i decided to replace the engine and mod it with all the things I had held off on trying to be cost conscious. With a new exhaust, brakes, HID's, levers, sprocket, rearsets, and wheels its totally different bike. and for a fraction of the cost of buying a new one and doing the same mods.

Keep the R1, invest in family. If Family likes doing motox, then spend your money there.....the return on investment is incalculable.

I agree. With a son and wife that ride , we all like mashing it out on the dirtbikes.
