I am getting either a leftover 2012 or 2013 r1 next year and was looking to find out what i can do to it to make it good for everyday usage. I don't have a car so it's going to be my daily driver. i also got a 1.5 hour commute twice a week. I wanted to know what kind of gel seat was recommended and grips and what could be recommended to help relieve the underseat heat of the exhaust. To sum it up what can be done to make it a decent all arounder.

do you ride now? ride it and you will figure it out. what works or me might not work for you....the bike is a good bike to begin with.

First thing I did was to soften the preload a bit. Second thing I did was to stick heat shield material under the seat. I used the stuff that mechanics put under car bonnets to repel engine heat. Another thing you might consider is Michelin Pilot Road tires. Either the 2 or 3 - both will be fine. If you are planning on doing many highway miles, an aftermarket screen will help reduce wind exposure. Lastly, use ear plugs and consider staying with the stock muffler - noise on a long commute can tire you out.

The exhaust heat can also be reduced by removing the cat, but then you will require new fueling. This suggestion also contradicts my other suggestion about reducing noise levels.

Setting the suspension to your likings is a good start. The other stuff, as shhaker mentioned you can find out as you ride along, because everyone has preferences of their own.

I commute on my 09 every day and I just gutted the cat to get rid of the heat...stock seat can become a bit uncomfy when travelling long distances so I would recommend a proper gel seat...many available on the net. Other than that its a pretty good commuter

Alright thanks for the heads up on seat and cat I was thinking of going to a track day to get the suspensionset up for my weight I did it on my other bike but I want sure how much difference it would make on a1000. Yea I was thinking of sticking with the stock mufflers. Sorry my question was so generic. The guys I ride with done ride track or have any real knowledge on the crossplane powered bikes
