I bought my first bike with my own money at 17 (had a great paying summer job). I DID NOT tell my parents I bought a bike and hid it at my buddies place for the 1st couple of weeks. When I brought it home my parents were not happy but they said they just wanted me to be careful on it (it was a 750 supersport).
My buddy who was 16 wanted a bike as soon as I got one (just because I had one) and his dad (who owned a large chain of Camera stores) bought him a Yamaha XJ 750. My buddy already had a Grand National that dad had bought him...
Anyways 2 week later my buddy snaps his neck running into a parked car because he negotiated a turn very wrong...dead...
So - sometimes parents are to blame to a degree. We all learn things the hard way at times...

Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear that.
I WATCHED a buddy of mine with only a year MAYBE of riding experience at age 18 on his 2nd bike(07 R1) take a curve too fast and locked the rear break up with a cold tire. He hit the far curb, flipped a few times, and there he and his totaled R1 lay. He ended up with a broken foot, torn spleen, broken rib, and some serious road rash on his foot where it hit the curb. He was lucky to still be alive since he had no gear on besides a helmet.

Once you collect your CBT certificate you need to pass a theory test, once thats passed you can then put in for your practical test. Our test is basically the same here in Oz except;
1. 16yrs 9months min age
2. There is a list of learner approved bikes which is basically anything under 659CC with a poor power to weight ratio

If your parents allowed you to buy a bike at 16 it's still their decision. Not the smartest parenting if you ask me, but if they feel your mature enough to own one and be on public roads, more power to them I guess.
If you did it behind their back, you were just a little douche bag kid now weren't you

depends on the state, some states you can head off on your own at 16, other people just go off on their own at 16 legal or not.
