Not trying to be a smartass - I really don't know...
Why are SEALs part of the Navy when they do stuff by air and land as well?
And what is the diff between Marines and Navy?

I don't think he was "untouchable"; otherwise he would have never confessed, I would think. The guy was married to the same woman for 35+years....I am sure some young hot piece of strange threw it at him....who could resist, really?
I give him credit for coming forward and admitting it, but he has tarnished his achievements and probably ruined his career for anything other than corporate from here on out.

SEALs came from the "underwater demolish teams/combat swimmers". When the Army intridued the Special Forces in the 50s, the Navy created their own out of the UDTs, basically.
Easiest way to describe the Marines from the Navy is that the Marines are riflemen/infantry of the Navy as its amphibious force. This is a very basic and generic explanation.

Long read, but oh so interesting.

In other words...
The Marine Corps considers itself primarily a rapid strike, rapid deployment force, with the focus on Air/Ground combined capabilities. There's Marine Expeditionary Units, stationed at sea, but I really think the amphibious component of the Marine Corps has shuffled to the back of the priority list over the past 50 years. Close air support, quick strike, seem to me to be the priorities now. But, they also have armor, artillery, rotary and fixed wing, etc. Fairly self-sufficient for 60 days, but typically need a ride to the fight.
