How would a Ruger Mini-14 Tactical stack up against any of the M4's as far as reliability, ability to chew thru a wide range of ammo quality, and overall durability?

It's a a good sound rifle that will feed anything available. Great gun to throw in the truck for a rainy day. It will only feed Ruger mags reliably. Since old man ruger died, they have started making 30 rounders again.

the mini-14 was a consideration of mine while looking for a backpacking rifle. i ended up going with a keltec su-16c with a red dot sight (no zoom) on it. 30 rd mags. baseball size groups at 200 yrds shooting off the built in bipod. i haven't had a jam yet, but i've only gone through 200 rds and lubed it once when i first bought it. so far i think it's pretty solid and for the price i picked it up for, no complaints at all other than the bipod legs are still a bitch to get undone.

The Mini would better compare to the SKS.

.223/5.56 version . The cheapo from Walmart. Not anything special compared to what everybody else here has but a decent start.

It's a decent rifle for the money. It's better to start off with minimal investment and learn what you like/want in a rifle like that, then plan out and move up on the next one so you know what you want and know what you're getting. You don't want to start with a Noveske, only to find out that you don't like this style of gun or you wish you'd gotten a different set of options, etc. Go to range, load gun, pull trigger. Repeat. It will all sort itself out.

Totally why I decided to go that route. Frank and a couple others had me gassed up last year to build one. The more I have studied the more I was like what do I really want. Its not a huge amount of money but I don't like just jumping into things anymore and it takes me forever to do stuff like that now. It'll be forever till I upgrade year model on the bike

All it needs to do is go bang at every pull of the go lever and as accurate as you can get and everything else will fall incline like kirk said.

The DPMS Sportical is a great starter rifle. It has everything you need and it will shoot very well. Mine is a wilson lower with a doublestar parts kit and cheapo stock. I put NCstar BUIS on it and a cowitnessing SPARC red dot by Vortex. All in all I'm 750 bucks in a fully functioning, night vision compatible AR15. The only real upgrades I needed to make it work a little better was the enhanced charging handle, trigger spring kit and sling attachment back plate.

Not sure if this'll work but....

Got out to 3 shots touching at 200 yards then the scope started to $hit out on me. Shot 4 more shots and it moved 2" to the right and 2" down with each shot. It was a cheapo scope though (8x32x50 for $99). I'll have to get a gooder one on it and try it again.
I like it though.
