5.56 rds are going to be more common than your 7.62 rds, but i really doubt you'd have a hard time finding either down the road and if shtf there'd probably be enough accessible through trades etc of either caliber.
note: i typed caliper but had to delete it because you have it stuck in my head now, thanks.

All of NATO uses 5.56 and it was ALL being used by the mil. There's no such thing as cheap surplus ammo anymore. Just because 5.56 was being produced in mass quantities doesn't mean the public can buy it. The big reason for the price increases was the cost of brass and lead which went through the roof due to the fact that much of it was being diverted to the war efforts.

OK, got done with my sushi. You want distance, that can be accomplished with both 308 or 223. Builds would be different but functionality would be similar. The heart of a good AR platform is the Bolt and carrier, with the barrel being second. Functionality is first and foremost, accuracy can be found elsewhere.
There are a ton of platforms that will work for you. Buying a quality system is paramount. For your purposes, impingement or piston would work, but impingement is easier to upgrade and buy parts for so I'd go that way for you. I'd get something with a match grade Krieger barrel or similar 1/8 or 1/7. Enhanced Geiselle trigger group, match or SSA. You can dress up a standard lower or buy a seekins billet lower/upper combo. Full length rail, integrated Block buis. Magpul stock or your choice. Mad rear BUIS. Miad grip, Magpul trigger guard.
Another option is a built Knights Armament full system.

On second thought, get a Red Jacket built AR-15. That would be best.

i built a dpms ar-10. i like it alot. alot of the uppers/lowers are all about the same. ie, double star, dpms, bushmaster, spikes tactical, dont get me wrong there are a few out there that are tits. such a larue. but your going to pay high dollar. as far as the lowers and uppers, unless its a billet they are the same except for the name on the side. ive built a dozen or so, and its pretty much plug and play. bolts and barrels its up to you how much you want to spend. ive built cheepo guns and more expensive and they all shoot with no jamming issues.

I've never touched one, so I can't compare. But the OBR is the best thing I've had the privileged of shooting on the Army side.

I was thinking more along the lines, that IF the shit hit the fan, it would be an easier find. Having said that, I think I'm still leaning towards the 7.62 build. I'm looking into most of what everyone said. As far as build vs. Buy, still kinda on the fence. FFL transfer really isn't. Big deal, I can get it done for 10 bucks. :/

Meister, being that we're on this topic. I've been waiting on my Sig Sauer M400E FDE to come in for 5 months now..I'm a pretty big sig fan, but couldn't swing the 516/716 at the time. Should I keep waiting on this thing to come in? or move onto greener pastures.

You're going to kill your neighbors. The best home defense is a shotgun.
I went with 308 because people tend to hide behind shit when you start shooting at them. It will go through the burglar, through your house and through your neighbors house.

If you're not stocked up on ammo before SHTF, you're fvcked.
No one has pointed out that not all 308's are AR-10.
AR-10 refers to Armalite pattern. DPMS pattern is LR308. RRA is LAR-308
There is no such thing as a mil-spec 308 as a whole. However some parts will be mil-spec.
It's best (but not necassarily a must) to get your BCG and barrel from the same manufacturer. Remember, no mil-spec.
Some manufacturers make their rifles and parts proprietary. Many are patterened after Armailite or DPMS.
Some use Armailte mags, some use SR-25 mags. If you want to use P-mags, make sure the rifle you purchase accepts DPMS or SR-25 mags.
If you want to get into 308's do your research, know the patterns, check and double check part compatability before buying anything.

Around 3K, I've seen armalites for around 25-28 but i believe the repr is the best. I need to look into the knights SR-25 as well.
