It's like watching a train wreck. These people are nutters.

It's good to still see some old timers on here.
Anyway, preparing for short-term natural disaster is wise and feasible. Anything else is just reaching for the stars. Yes, I do own a number of handguns and AR15s, but that's for my job.
Having to deal with a few "Let's Have a Revolution Party" nut cases recently, I can tell you that the idea of overthrowing the US Government is not going to happen. Yes, those loud mouth internet warriors sitting behind their keyboard preaching conspiracy theories and constitutional rights do really cry like a little girl after spending a few nights in jail. At the end of the day, after all of these crying and bitching on the internet, nothing will happen.
A more realistic doom day scenario most likely will be a pathogen outbreak. Once these antibiotic resistance viruses take hold, millions will die and evolution will take its course. The best thing that you can do to prepare yourself for doom day is to spend the time now with your love ones.

I was totally unprepared. Still am for that matter. I did some work to clean up and get things back in order. I did put my go bag back together. The biggest thing is OPSEC within the house. Gotta get my stuff in order. I never considered the idea that I might have to leave if the house wasn't overrun or on fire. Really scared the shit outta me.

To me, that is #1 when it comes to preparing. Was also a point being made by many of us that it's more than likely to occur than any other reason. I never leave things laying around that might need to be grabbed in a hurry. Short of clothes, my work bag has nearly everything I need for an emergency dash from the house or can't make it home from work. I have a lot of friends scattered around the area, and am at most five miles from any one of them. So, a quick call, or jog to their place and I'm generally at a safe place.
Regarding stuff in the home visible when it shouldn't be, that's a huge failure. I always have things out of plain sight that I don't want someone to see. No financial documents, checkbooks, cards, firearms, etc. You never know when you need to call a repairman in, or someone stops by unannounced. My ex had jewelry stolen that she had sitting on the counter by a "friend." Learning lesson for her and she used to call me paranoid when in actuality, I am "mindful" of my belongings.
