I'm not talking components only, I'm referencing geometry. My suspension is 100% stock right now, I simply shimmed the rear and the front is at maximum height. Components are one thing, geometry another. I just referenced those parts and people because they are clearly experts on the matter and it elaborates upon the point I was making. You don't want to drop the front on a crossplane. There's not a ton of clearance as it is.

when my bike was stock i droped my front end 4mm and i thought it helped with turn in and i also found it helped the front end stay on line a little when getting on the gas through a turn but mostly i was having a problem with the front comming up to high ( the track here in edmonton is mostly low speed cornors ) and lowering 4mm made a world of difference
if ya cant dodge it, ram it

The rear they do at stock length+4mm and whatever link settings are being used. Oh and they aren't aftermarket forks, there are series restrictions. Tubes are stock, they run the same stuff we can buy.

The op wants to know about the difference between the current model and 08 series R1. You wanna slap your gums and drop names and places instead of the asked info, then you wanna argue about it. The 09+ forks are crap comparatively. Why don't you call Chuck right now then go flap your gums at Ohlins USA a while. I'm sure they love talking to someone who wants to know all about how to set up their bike without spending a dime for their products. Not gonna happen. I'm willing to bet you've never even ridden an 08.
I'm done with ya, it's like Gravity Collapse is back.

I think that unless you are a part of a professional race team (Graves, Yamaha, etc.) with podium finishes, we are all noobs.

I can still go faster than some people running full ohlins with my stock junker.

As I've clearly just explained I was elaborating on the people I got my information from. Geometry is one thing. Suspension components another. You are arguing geometry points on a bike you don't own. Typically, the one you have is of course the better bike. Oh and the guys who have the previous generation, it's better than both of ours. I trust the engineers at Yamaha to move forward. I know my suspension guy says the R1 front end with new springs is golden. It's all relative. What is your level of expertise that gives you the ability to say your front end is better? I'm using information gained from reputable sources, not name dropping. Pull the tampon out of your vagina and replace it with a fresh one.
Just for educational purposes, here's Ken Hill on a stock crossplane, I believe it still has the mirrors attached and an AMA superbike 1098R. "crap" forks indeed.

As long as you can deal with the implications, you'll be fine.

I was faster on my stock setup. I have only had 1 track weekend on the new suspension, so I still have a long way to go to get it dialed in.

Although I have only had mine for 3 years, I don't think I will ever stop learning. And now I am toying around with getting an S1000rr, so I will have to re-learn how to ride all over again.
Will you be at Putnam this upcoming year at all?

I always hated the first session after getting new boingers.
I'm sure I'll be there a few times this year. Depends on when/if I can get my hands fixed. My carpal tunnel is so bad now I can only do so many laps at a time. The faster, the less laps I can do. Sucks.

Get the '12, engine has more low/mid making it easier to ride. Power comes on stronger yet smoother, definitely more managable than an '04-'08's mainly upper rpm power hit. Traction control is a major bonus, especially for a liter bike newb. Performance parts will be more accessible in the coming years for '09+ model yrs as well. If you get the '12 I'll flash it for you, once your'e use to it.

I'm not the fastest or slowest. I know a lot of guys that have been riding a lot longer than me that are slower and I know guys with less track experience that are faster. Just having more track experience in years is kinda irrelevant as well. 1 year could be 4 track days or 40 trackdays
I still invite him out to the track to see how fast he really is
