Mars rover found... plastic
I'm a keen enthusiast of the Mars mission, in fact simply for the "First Man on Mars" historical reference I'd volunteer to go to Mars tomorrow, one way an' all.
But, look what the Rover found up on Mars... It's a 3D .gif of what looks like plastic.

A lot of tech has come out of the space program

I dont mind my tax dollars being used for space research.
Welfare recipients would make good astronauts.
(They just take up space anyway!)

War on drugs has taken a ridiculous toll, and not just financially. Space research/exploration is most certainly worthwhile.

Here's something interesting I read a while ago.
Quote:
Some facts for you:- Around 85% of NASA's annual budget goes outside of the program to researchers and engineers that are responsible for developing the technology used on manned and unmanned missions into space. Those technologies that are developed are widely used in other areas that aren't exclusive to NASA.- Our space program is an integral part of American education, our competitiveness, and the growth of U.S. technology. Compared with other forms of investment, the return is outstanding: A payback of $7 or 8 for every $1 invested over a period of a decade or so has been calculated for the Apollo Program, which at its peak accounted for a mere 4 percent of the Federal budget. It has been further estimated that, because of the potential for technology transfer and spinoff industries, every $1 spent on basic research in space today will generate $40 worth of economic growth on Earth.- $850 billion was spent on the bank bailout, which is several hundred BILLION dollars more than the 53 year running budget of NASA.- We currently spend about 20 million dollars AN HOUR in the middle east. So, the amount of money being cut from space exploration is equal to what we were spending on the "War on Terror" in just 15 hours. Ridiculous.- The planetary exploration budget for FY 13 has been cut an astonishing 38.5% from FY 12. That means, no planned missions to Mars in the near future. No new probes or satellites will be sent to the Gas Giants, their moons, dwarf planets or asteroids in our solar system. That's devastating news for the exploration of Saturn's moon, Titan (Which is thought to contain lakes and oceans of ethane and methane), Jupiter's moon, Europa (which is believed to possibly contain oceans of liquid water under its icy surface- Meaning, it's a strong candidate for extra terrestrial life) or another one of Saturn's moon, Enceladus. Enceladus is a geologically active body in our solar system that reflects 100% of the light that hits it and it's thought to be the primary cause of one of Saturn's prominent rings. Thanks to Cassini, we have learned that Encleadus shoots liquid water out of her plumes and she stands currently as the best candidate for human habitability. We wouldn't know all of this had it not been for the planetary exploration budget that's being systematically decreased to increase money spent on the war in The Middle East and bail out failing corporations.
NASA has over 6,300 patents and their technology has entered every facet of our lives. They are responsible for developing better pace-makers for heart patients, invisible braces for dental problems, improved the efficiency to track and destroy heat seeking missiles, scratch resistant lenses for prescription eyeglasses, Tempurpedic mattresses and pillows for people with orthopedic disorders (and used in most of your commercial airline seats), improved function and comfort for prosthetic limbs, padding for motorcycle seats and better protection for race car drivers, ear thermometers (which if you have children, you will be especially partial to this contribution), shoe insoles, long-distance telecommunications, satellite radio, smoke detectors, cordless tools, and water filters. To develop these tools and more, NASA NEEDS EXTENSIVE FUNDING. Please consider taking a moment to sign this petition and perhaps even pass it on along with this information. Don't tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon!
