And I thought having a piston operated would keep the inside cleaner than a gas operated one. Maybe it's the ammo, dirty American eagles. Yep, I gotta invest in a gas buster, burns my eye each time I pull the trigger.

Just think, an impingement system IS much dirtier. The longer the barrel, the more soot as well. AE is federal, and shouldn't be all that dirty. My impingement doesn't look like that after 300 rounds of suppressed 5.56 federal. It's got a 10.5" bbl though.

Need an opinion from all you guys with SBR's and know the federal NFA laws. Im going to get a SBR, for on duty use, through the PD. It will not be full auto. Is a Form 5 what I need? And will the weapon have to stay with the PD when I retire in 14 years? Thanks

I test drove one two weeks ago..... I was impressed! I also shot a Daniel Defence and a LWRC. Both great weapons but the LVOA shot better.

All depends on your department regs. If you modify your personal weapon into an SBR, you must file the form 1. If you buy it modded you will file the Form 4. If the pd purchases the weapon, it will be a Form 5 and you will have to turn it over (or purchase it if legally possible at the time) when you retire. The form 5 will cost nothing and be pushed through in weeks, the form 1 or 4 will cost 200 and take 6-7 months.

There are still 3 1928 Thompson's that are missing from IPD since the 70's. They can't list them as stolen because they don't know where they are or who had them when the new sheriff came in. In fact, over 30 full auto weapons are missing from the department. Most are Uzi's and post sample HK's.

During the 70's, the IPD wasn't known for it's record keeping. There were arrests made for Mopery, Pre Mopery and 2nd degree Moprey. The stories of guys waking up after a shift with their gun in the passengers seat and all their rounds expended, but can't remember where they were. They had a good time back then. Lots of graft.

They recovered one in 2004 that wasn't even registered in the IPD logs. It had paperwork and the IPD letterhead with it in the case. It was a former detective who died and they found it in his attic.
