I've never understood why they go through all the trouble of tying a noose when a slip knot would accomplish the same thing

There's a formula for hanging per your weight and height. Another reason is that in the olden days, rope wasn't as strong, so they used a noose to keep the rope from breaking at the knot.

The hangman's knot is supposed to break your neck quicker! it is placed to the side of your head and as it gets taught it slams the side of your head and snaps it sideways and breaks your neck! before the rope jerking does it.
