Thanks everyone, my goal in posting wasn't to get kudo's but to give others something to think about . . . if I can do it so can others 
I didn't do it by myself, I had some amazing people help me in both AA & NA. I literally went to a meeting every day for the first seven years. During the holidays it wasn't uncommon for me to hit two in a day/night
