I've owned '05, '02 and '99 R1's, the best of that lot IMO is the one I still own, the '99.

07-08 R1 owns the roads
The 2007 - 2008 R1 has proven to be the best in and out.
The stance of the 07-08 is amazing

Almost agree with that. But I think the 07-08 has the greatest performance potential. At least in my opinion. I didn't like the looks until later machines came out.

I almost had to go back in time to get 08 when I had 09/10 as choice. Best looking and best decision I made. I never rode others so cannot comment on performance.

I have an 07 and the 09. The 09 is the best one IMO.

i know its an old thread
i just want to say hi and ride safe to all my r1 brothers!!
And based on the question"best stock r1 and why", i would like to say the 2001 was hands down the turning point and benchmark for all the newer models. It was the last carb and the best 20 valve low end monster yamaha has ever created. my 2001 is alot more fun to ride than my 08, and i REALLY push both. Even mods done to both, but the 08 just doesnt have the grunt in the bottom end as my 01 had out of the box. with both bikes worked and dynoed, it is noticibly faster than my 08. By ALOT!
