I went from an RZ350 to a '00 R1, MASSIVE difference. I would recommend getting a '12 model with factory TC. Any '09+ R1 has extremely easy to use power, as well as 3 modes for varied levels of throttle response (from soft to abrupt) Not nearly as intimidating as any '98-'03 models massive bottom end and midrange power, or '04-'08 models hard hitting upper midrange power. The '12 models factory TC also has antiwheelie function in the 2 highest levels of sensitivity (levels 5&6), you will be fine on one. Speedometer is what you need to keep an eye on, as speed comes easily in any gear. Much better for 2up riding too, a '12 R1 makes as much torque at 4000 rpm as a 600 does when fully wound up.

Yes, Bazzaz makes a fuel controller with a quick shifter function as well as TC all in one unit. ($750-$900) depending on where it is bought. Then it needs to be installed and adjusted properly. Yamaha has invested alot in the development of their factory TC system, and it is praised by many magazines. Read my post above about it, it works and you will be safer in the wet (and cold) with it. Romney Cycle in Romney West Va. has excellent pricing, I drove from Pa. to get my '12 50th from them for $12,995!!! Over $1500 BELOW list price!!!

Just to give you an idea for pricing, I got my 2010 R1 ROSSI FIAT Edition October of 2011 for $9,900 OTD (out the door). I thought that was an awesome deal considering the MSRP on this bike was $14,500 just one year prior. Since then I managed to use the money I save for all my mods and accessories. The full Bazzaz system with TC being one of them...

i paid 10600 for my 09 in sept09 so i'm with this guy on shopping around and getting better pricing.
and idk why everyone keeps telling you to get TC? if your that reckless with the throttle then maybe r1 isnt for you. save your money and get a 09-10 model use the rest for mods. if you just want TC that bad you can do what others have suggested and get the bazzaz TC system

No you're right he do not need TC but for the price everyone asking for 2011. He can get a 2012 or 2013 with TC for $12295.00 at Romney Cycle, West VA. That's the same price as the 2011 he was looking at !!!! In Romney will deliver it to him for good price .

Thanks to everyone who replied! It still will probably be a few more months before i have the money to do anything, but everyday i grow more excited. Hah i dont even have the bike yet and i am already making my gurl jealous!
From what it sounds like i shouldnt be too concerned about the tcs, but i am still leaning towards it. More because of rainy days than anything. I feel so out of the loop for not knowing about aftermarket tcs and also the suggestions of flashing the ecu. When i flash the ecu does that get rid of the power mappings A, and B mode or something?
I never really thought i would not be able to handel the R1 as a street rider but i do see how going to the dragon could be an unwise decision before i have more seat time. I was thinking also that maybe i could keep
My 600 and make that a track bike. See how slow
I am compared to some other riders (and i know i will be hah).
I appreciate all of your advise and i am glad to know all of you love your R1's!
Do the R1s have any problems that i should be aware of? I have heard that they are very reliable, and i have not really heard of any of the big four literbikes really having any problems.

Not sure of any 'problems' common with the R1. I guess it depends on the year of the bike if they have any specific problems. My model seems to shut off at random times while riding. Only happened to me once and haven't had the problem since. If you are mechanically inclined, you will be able to fix most of the issues yourself.
