Windows 8
Anyone take the plunge on Windows 8 yet? Just finished updating my laptop.
Install went pretty smooth - the new interface is very tablet like. Just starting to dig into the details and wondered if anyone else had any experience with it.

Been using the RTM for past couple weeks. Good so far, couple things that went wrong, Skype for Windows 8 mergered by Windows Account and Skype, went to reformat it and cannot log into Skype.
My Ceton tunner cannot work yet.
So far everything so far so good.

What are you running it on? Surface by any chance? I am tempted to give on of those a test drive.

What's going on kw
I haven't installed it and probably won't as I'm feed up with all the changes between windows. Find one product that works and stay with it. Quit releasing things with major bugs.

yeah, but Windows 7 actually provided hope that maybe Microsoft was getting a handle on things.

On a tablet or phone it's great, but on a laptop or desktop the Metro interface and 'gesture driven' interface is lame. I cannot see the corporate world migrating to Windows 8 for a domain environment. home pc's may be ok, but either they re-write a revision for one of the service packs or the entire corporate world waits for Windows 9. I've demo'd it as a VM for a few months and personally it's just not the best thing for the pc/laptop network environment in an office. It's too different, and the older pc users will be totally ****ed by not having a start menu any more.

Agreed - I would have a difficult time rolling this out at the office. The interface would result in a lot downtime and confusion for some of the technology static people.
For my own PC though I am enjoying the new interface.
Not hard to see where MS is going - chasing the portable computing / app driven markets of Apple and Android on a whole new level.

ok so they just walked in with 3 new computers at my job. very barebones. full size cases. light as hell. I was thinking it was a "barebones build" kit. opened it up. tiny motherboard, some memory, HDD. I was thinking to myself...WTF is the power supply.
well turns out its got a small power adapter that plugs into the motherboard for power. the tiles on windows 8 SUCKS. but i got out of them and found the old fashioned desktop....minus a start menu though.
just trying to find where everything is located is a pain.
im still setting it up...so well see if its worth it.

some pics of the screens
initial startup screen
bar on the right is the new "start menu control bar"
move mouse to lower left corner and you can go to an old fashioned desktop
finally...old school desktop
My computer is the same layout
computer specs.

I've tried it on the display computers at the local comp shop and I'm not a fan. Will be buying a new computer in a few weeks time and I'll see what the hands on use is like.

Ok, installed Windows 8 on the home workstation (which is my dev lab) here are the specs
Asus P6T
i7 920 OC'd to 4.12GHz
24GB 1600 RAM @ 1600MHz
(2)WD Black 1TB SATAs (Windows 8, OSX 10.8)
(3) Seagate 750GB SATAs (Software RAID @ 2TB)
(12) 600GB HP 10K SAS w/LSI MegaRAID (various raid configs)
I'm currently running Windows 8 Pro, along with VMware Workstation 9- which in turn utilizes that 24GB of RAM to run an infrastructure worth of VM's... Along with GNS3 emulating a core intensive networking environment... :sing
I will say this- The performance monitoring and detail to trending is very impressive for an OS out the box And yes, it is stable; I'm running multiple SQL 2008 VM's, Exchange 2010, DC's, WSUS, KMS, SCCM, and not to mention ESXi VM's and the entire vSphere/vCloud and VMware SRM suites. NO CRASHES. :flex
Just received the email from Microsoft for the WMP product key, so I'm going to pop that in now...
As far as the new interface goes... I don't too much care for it The whole "right-click for all apps" thing is kinda odd- ESPECIALLY on Windows Server 2012... The start button is hidden until you mouse over the corner of the screen, then a right-click just to get to "Run" which is where I do most of my business If I could just click start and see ALL my apps, that would be nice.
All in all, Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 in a wildcat offense.

Create a desktop shortcut with this for the target:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0 /hybrid
Hybrid shutdown cuts your boot time by two thirds, unlike the worthless hibernate.
