Hey all, a friend and I are in the early stages of planning a ride from Omaha NE to the pacific coast summer of 2013. I was wondering if anyone on here would have any hot spots to stop at on the way. We have done a couple of rough maps to and from, I'll post the links. This would be both of ours first run of more than about 500 miles, any advice would be appreciated on gear, maintenance, travel plans, ect, ect. Also my bike is a 2000 R1 so it is has a carburetor. Is there anything special I will need to do for altitude, or will it be ok to run as is? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a blast! You'll definitely have to post up 'as you go' pix! :)

Once you're here, check out the Rock Store! (Malibu)

Good luck, and enjoy. San Diego has some nice spots if you don't mind adding a couple hours ride to your trip. Not sure what you are considering as stops. We might be able to make better recommendations for you on some stops.

As for long distance trips via R1. I'm going to refer you to the granddaddy of all R1 trip threads here:

Thanks. Haven't really thought to much about stops yet. Prob hit up some of the bigger tourist traps. We started out with just a 5 day trip up into the Rockies, but this route would prob be about 14 days. From what I can figure we are going to have to put in about 6-8 hrs per day of good riding just to make the mileage.

I would figure closer to 8-10 so as to help add some leisure days which can then be used in case you run into inclement weather and/or problems. Read the thread I linked. He covers everything from planning the trip to ride reports.

some awesome riding there mate... i've done most of that.. its always a blast..

make sure to ride up to the new Skywalk at Grand Canyon... look up details on where to get tix as my folks
had to ride the damn road that takes you up there twice.. haahha... i think they only accept cash up at the kiosk... woops... :lol

Delicate arch in the MOab desert is a sight, but it seems to be kinda right in the middle of the two routes' you have chosen,
also monument valley just north of G. Canyon is pretty damn awesome... kinda long and boring as well though... lol...

You gotta visit Red Rock amphitheater while in Colorado.. its a must... I stayed up in Denver with my uncle for a couple days...

once you get back to Reno/Tahoe.. have a look at the roads just south of there, 88, 4, 108 all sit right in the deep north of Yosemite...
if you have the time.. it is so worth while to go through there... no. 4 was my favorite.. i was just out there last year... Kings Canyon
is a wild ride as well if you have the time...

my trip :: BC, Salt Lake City, Reno/Tahoe, Yosemite, San Francisco, up the Oregon coast n' back home...

my folks just did Grand Canyon last year... hitting up Reno/Tahoe and back up via Lake Tahoe after heading down the coast from here
for starters... kinda a backward loop... haha... but i've done the whole trip you're planning years ago... def. give yourself plenty of time.
write down lots of notes on where the tourist traps are and you can always adjust your route as you go along...
