I changed my oil couple days ago...was a breeze..
However, here is my question...How do you guys make sure that you've flushed all the old oil?
Due to the design of the oil pan/resevoir, you will have a some old oil left in there...I ran half a quart of clean oil through to make sure that what was coming out was clean and it came clean.
I closed up everything, put new oil and started the bike. As I watched the oil window, I noticed the old oil starting to mix with the new one and now it's back to dark again..
My question is, how do you ensure everything is flushed out? would cranking the engine spit everything out or would this just cause more problem to the engine? (I'm only talking about cranking for a few second)
I also thought about heating the oil and use the hot oil to flush the old one out, but physics tells me that hot oil is less denser than the "cool" one in the engine therefore it will not do much...
you input is appreciated...
sit on top of your bike and gently swing it back and forth until it stops coming out. Or have someone there while you do it to watch. You will NEVER get 100% of the old oil out. bike or car
1) Go for a ride, 10 miles or so, get the motor and its oil up to temperature.
2) Come home, drain the oil from the drain plug and oil filter. Let it drain for an hour if you really want to be thorough.
3) Do not run the motor with no oil in it to "get it all out". The lack of an adequate supply of oil will cause metal on metal contact. Then, you will be in a world of hurt. EDIT: Just read the link above, learn somethin every day. I ain't doin it, but it appears to be legit.
4) Install a new filter that is filled with clean oil. Run a bead of clean oil on the rubber gasket. Hand tighten.
5) Install drain plug.
6) Fill motor with new oil and put the oil fill cap back on the bike.
7) Wipe off all the excess oil and start the bike. Check for leaks.
8) Go ride...
Thank you guys...
The diagnostic mode is certainly something to try out...
and you can't get any more basic than Moonligher step by step instructions
Thanks guys
i did this, and the bike started with no oil, I wanted to see how long i could pin the throttle in neutral with no oil off the red limiter, damn, it was cool, i blew the engine in 24 seconds, but i got all the dirty oil out:lol:rock:thumbup
J/K that would be the way to go, me personally, i go for a short ride, cycle through the gears, let it cool for 5 minutes, put the bike on both stands, and drain and let it sit for a while, get as much out as i can, it has worked out well for me...
I only mentioned the pan because of the surprising amount of oil left in it but you're right there is probably just as much left in the cams & head.
