I'm going up to Skyline Drive the weekend of August 2. Is anyone interested or going to be in the area?

I assuming you're talking about Skyline in California. I've been avoiding this area ever since the crackdown with riders. CHP and other county PDs have been roaming around cracking down on squids and others. I just found that even though it is one popular joint and very nice roads to get there, it is way too packed on Sundays. If you're going to ride there, I recommend weekdays, less riders and of course less cops.

I live in Waldorf so if you want to meet up anytime just let me know. As for Skyline, I'm heading up there Friday night and coming back Sunday. I'm going up there camping but I'm planning on sneaking out to get some riding in.

Hey Young.... I used to live in that area. I hear a lot of guys go out there riding, but I'm not sure where. Do you pass the gates and go up the mountain to ride or is there another road you can take? A buddy and I were planning to go out that way on Sunday morning if the weather permits.... Let me know if you have any info.. Might catch you up there for a quick run before you leave!

This is the first time I'm going up there so I really don't know much about it. If you want to try to meet up or something send me an email: youngg@ih.navy.mil

superspeedemon-send me an email to the above address and we'll get together.

Be careful.

You guys ever watch the TV show Dukes of Hazzard. Part of the theme song goes..."the mountain might get us but the law never will." On Skyline drive, this aint the case. It's just the opposite. The speed limit is 35 and no were to go if you see flashing lights. All 5 of us got sppeding tickets of $100 for doing 60 in a 35. We got clocked at 64, just me in the front but they gave us all tickets. U.S. park rangers. if you don't pay they send a US marshall to your house. Watch out for deer. Me and my boys from eastern PA hit up that rode on the way to the Honda Hoot, good luck and enjoy.

Thanks for the info. I've heard about the cops up there, hopefully I get through it unscathed.

I go to Skyline all the time. The park is great, but you should go very early in the morning; the cars come out in force around noon. It's $5 to get in the park ($20 for a year pass), and I've only seen one cop in all my visits. A better route is, however, RT211. This is full of bikes on the weekend and the cops pretty much stay away (but it is advisable that you don't crank it up in the straights). RT211 is near skyline and is full of banked turns (pretty freaky at first).

If you're interested in going up there, I'm game this Saturday. I would suggest meeting up early @ about 7 am, getting from breakfast and then riding until about 1:00 pm in the area.

If we don't meet up, watch out for deer! There pleantiful in the mornings. Speaking of Dukes of Hazard, the actual Cooter (the actor) owns a restaurant and bar just off of Skyline called "Cooters." He even has one of the actual General Lees parked out front.

PM me if your game.

Hey Tim,

How do you get to RT211? I have a couple friends that say they hit it from Rt 50.... I'm thinking about going out that way one day this weekend.

You take the Gainville Exit off of RT66. You can also access it through Skyline Drive.

If you take the Front Royal Exit off of 66, go to the Northern Entrance of the National Park, and go about 30 miles through the park you'll see the exit for RT211. This exit bring you right into the sweet spot of RT211.

If you take the Gaineville exit, beware of Cops on RT211 as you make you way. That is, keep speed down on below 20mph over, at least.

Another way to get there and my favorite is to take the Marshall Exit off RT66 (Exit 27). Accross the overpass take your first right (I believe the road is called Crest Hill Road (RT 647). The road is awesome and a great back country road. Keep a look out out for the occassional loose gravel and combine! Stay on that road through any intersection until you come to the end of it and a "T" in the road with a "BB&T" bank on your left (onto Zachery Taylor Highway). Take a left here and continue until you hit RT211. Take a right on RT 211 and enjoy. When you first take the banked turns remember to keep your head even with the horizon. If you don't, you'll experience a vertigo-like feeling.

Skyline is a great road for touring. Nice sweepers, great traction, and relatively clear. But there are too many cops for real riding. And tickets there are severe.

The real riding place is Rt. 211 in Sperryville. It is called Thorton’s gap. It is a National park that intersects with Skyline. Usually there are no tickets unless you crash. Nice twisty bits up and down the mountain. If you see Cooter’s garage with the General Lee out front (I am not kidding), you are almost there. I am going to try to go this Saturday.

You are right. I didn't even go on Skyline, I pretty much just did that run on 211. It was really awesome. I am completely ruined for roads around where I live now. I can't wait to go back there. I got a picture with Cooter in front of the General Lee.

BTW-if you are going to ride up there be real careful, I saw 3 wrecks in 2 days. Everyone left in an ambulance but were for the most part okay aside from some broken bones.

I'm going to try and head back up there in a couple weeks after I get back from vacation.
