Chains and Sprockets!

Ok, so I can admit I don't know alot chains and what is better. So i'm asking for help from people who do know.

I've heard about the 520 kit and that it's basically lighter and that the stock chain is ok. I've got a 04 r1 and i've dropped a tooth on the front already, so what I want to know, is it worth it to get a better chain over the stock if mine is ok?

What are good sprockets to get? Does weight play a factor with sprockets?

I did do a search too btw, didn't find the answers I was looking for.

I do the 1/4 track once in a while, otherwise I play on the twisties alot, but if I can get more hp outta my bike, i'd like it.

From the reading I have done. I've not interested in a 520 conversion. I ride my bike hard.

So what is the best setup for a 530 setup?

Guys it all depends on you and how you ride. If you clutch wheelies or are quite hard on your drivetrain (tranny, chain/sprockets) then stay with the 530 or stock (also 530)

if you are looking for every last bit of hp or racing etc and/or are smooth to your drivetrain than a 520 from DID or RK is just fine.

I've had awesome longevity with my DID 520 ERV2 and Titan tough sprockets on my 02 and have put 15,000 miles on it and will replace in the begining of the next season just for safety since in all honesty my chain and sprockets aren't showing much wear but I'll replace anyway.

I got less life on my 99 Yzf600r from clutching wheelies

It's up to you

ok, so I do wheelies and lotsa street racing with buddiees, we frequent the 1/4 track, but we do a few trips to the mountains too, so it sounds like the 530 is for me.

Would I benefit from a new chain over the stock?

Do aftermarket sprockets make a difference? IE. Weight, longevity

I'd stay with stock wear/beat that one and then replace it with a slightly better/lighter/cooler looking(gold) one. I kept my stock one on til 8k then replaced and will replace next yeat with around 23k on it

Stock sprockets will give you the best longivity as they are STEEL. 90% of aftermarket rear sprockets will be aluminum and will wear alot faster. Sure they will be a little bit lighter... but not worth the cost of replacing them more often IMHO.

Your stock chain and sprockets can last you a long time if maintained correctly. Like 25,000 miles.

Either the DID Erv2 or the RK GB520GXW, both are very strong 520 chains..

I've got the RK..No problems here..

DID 520ERV2. Hasn't given me any problems. Put about 1000 pretty hard miles on it so far, and no stretch adjustment yet. I use AFAM alloy sprockets, but a 520 chain combined with a steel or stainless steel (Sidewinder) sprocket would give the best longevity.

Ive got nearly 13000 miles on my stock chain and sprockets, no major wear yet. Would it matter if i just bought new sprockets like Renthal and just keep the stock chain and change it later on? Also ive seen a chain and sprocket set on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MakeTrack=true any idea if there any good?

No replace together with that kind of mileage since both are worn equally. If you put a new chain on old sprockets or vs versa it will wear the new part at a faster rate since the parts like to together.

not a good idea to do just 1

Thanks for the advice, i was thinkin if i dont go for the SSS chain and sprockets in the ebay link (if there any good or not) to go for 530 renthal sprockets with a DID gold x ring chain. 530 coz i do clutch ups, although im as smooth as i can be still would rather have the heavier duty one.

Sorry guys another question for ya, what chain grease, wax or lube do you use for your chains? Ive been using putoline chain and sprocket lube, it seems to keep the chain in good condition but it goes everywere, i.e all over my rear wheel and on the under side of my seat.

Thank again

If you go with a hard anodized rear aluminum sprocket from Sprocket specialist or AFAM you'll get good wear out of them. They also drop a considerable amount of weight over the stock steel rear sprocket. A pound maybe 2Ibs.

Personally I'd just change the sprockets.

I don't race, I'm primarily a street rider, and I don't clutch wheelies, but I opted to keep things stock for longevity. The only thing I will replace once a year (or more) will probably be tires. As far as weight reduction goes, I bought an exercise bike.
