What is the best oil? : Yamaha R1 Forum

Ok, I looked around and didn't see any threads on oil so I'll pose the question. I'm going to change the oil on my '01 R1 but I'm not sure what the best oil is. I live in Dallas, Texas so the weather is pretty moderate, although it gets pretty damn hot in the summers and the traffic sucks.

So the question, does anyone have any recomendations for oil?

I was recomended Motul 300v a fully sythetic oil. I used it before in a ducati no probs. One point though make sure you get the right oil filter the 2000/01 filter is diferent to the 98/99 correct part no 5GH-134400-00.

Hey bro,how many miles on the scoot? If you have a few go with Castrol R4 Superbike oil. It quiets down the R1 trademark ticking,shifts smoother and even runs a bit cooler. I use it and I can promise you will not be disappointed,it is worth every cent

I got the bike at around 4700 and I've put a little over 400 miles on it myself. The original owner took it to the Yamaha place and let them do it and he's not sure what kind they put in. I'm not sure what the mileage was when he changed it though. I think it's far better to change the oil too often than not. A bit of overkill is far worth it to save the ol' engine.

So where do you get the Castrol R4? Is it something you can find at a dealership (although they take you to the cleaners on price) or can I just order it? Is it a fully synthetic like the Motul 300v?

I've got an answer...who the hell knows which oil is best. Choose a good name and change it regularly with the filter and if the bike goes boom at least you know it wasn't because of the oil. Only use synthetics after break in and if you go that way, don't go back.

Most of the dealers around here sell it but you can go to Castrols website and locate a dealer I think

Mobil 1 now makes a motorcycle oil,i will be giving that a try at my next oil change.It is called MX4T-10W-40.
You can buy it on the mobil web-site or parts store.
Check out the site and see what they say about it.

I only ever use Mobil 1. this stuff is super slipery. I brother works with Mobil and I have seen the test results. One Ad run by BMW and Mobil on the car version a few years back stated a 325i which had done 276K miles was stripped and all enigine tolorences where within new engine spec. Respect. Also, My Bro had a Forad Fiesta (english car for the yanks) RS Turbo from new. He ran it in using the ford supplied oil ( the techies at Mobile said to do this or the engine woudl stay tight) and then installed it.

After 50K miles and have streched the head bolts thorugh over boosting the turbo form 4psi at peek to 12psi, the head gasket went. When we stripped the top end to install stronger head bolts and a new gasket, all the cyclinders still showed the original honing, no cyclinder polishing!

I will not use anything else!!

I just changed the oil and filter.
All the dealers in Denmark say to use BEL-RAY EXS oil.
It is recomended by yamaha Japan.

Also racers here use that oil on yamaha´s
