Unhappy Stator Cover Mounting Holes damaged...options?

Well, it's getting warm enough to ride now...and I'm gonna start fixing the R1.

My problem is that the mounting holes for the stator cover is gone. The stator cover broke like a china dish, and along with that, the bolts that held the stator cover on broke off chunks of the crankcase.

So, the bolts will not hold the stator cover on due to lack of screw area.

Are there any options besides replacing the whole crankcase? I don't imagine there would be any...but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How much should a crankcase cost? Yamaha says 1k for a new one.

well here in Ga we got a great welder that works magic on engines. so if you where here id say take it to him. It would be as good as new. Other than that, looks like you've got to buy the part. If you ask around some welding shops there may be another master out there. Just dont know. Here is a good place to get parts if it helps, there usually cheaper than most dealers. http://www.worldofcycles.com/ also the microphish for your bike will be on there. but dont go by the prices call them first, there great people.

you seriosuly think a welder could do it? I'll post a pic of it just so you all can get a real idea of the damage.

but yeap...world of cycles shows 1100 for the crankcase assy....hot damn.

No not any welder can do it. He must be really great at alum. welding i wouldnt trust no one to do this but my guy. Just because all the things i've saw him do. I mean i busted the hole under part of my motor where the oil plug went. the hole was like 1" and half diameter he fixed it and put the plug back. you couldnt even tell it had been broke. And that was with the hole and the plug only no parts to put back. He filled it hisself he is like a god when it comes to welding.

big thing to watch out for is the heat affecting seals, you maybe and this is a big maybe be able to use quicksteal or somekinda highheat resin, but id welding it and be done with it.

im stupid, quicksteel. Ive never tapped this so i have no idea what it would do. If you real crafty you could actualy put a nut in the putty and then stick it to the crank case. im still all for the welder though

Dont put crap in there if the whole hole is gone...it will just make the life of any welder miserable.

Bah do what I did... USE some High temp copper RTV from autozone and glue the sucker on there. You gotta get a new gasket the next time you take it off but by then you should have a new bike.

Edit: I took mine to a master aluminum welder and he said he could do it but 1) any oil left near the holes and the weld wouldn't hold so I'd have to drain the oil and SUPER dry it out. 2) I'd probably have to fill and re-tap the bolt holes the way mine was cracked.

I said **** it for now and when I get the cash or time I'll do it his way.

heh, how much would an alum welder cost? probably the same or close to the cost of buying a used crankcase. I'm pretty set on just picking up another crankcase for 200. But, once i take it off, i'll take it to an aluminum welder and see what he can do...then i can sell it! Or..keep it as a spare in case it happens again...

martinc is kinda right on the crap in the weld makes it a pain but any good welder would grind it with bevels on each side anyways, an extra 10 mins maybe with shit in the way.

also when welding on something that has oil on it for a long time the metal tends to bleed the oil when gotten hot, a buddy of mine was telling me he rewelded the valve seats on a 50's indian and had this problem, but where this is at shouldnt be a problem

We had it dont on a yzf600 a while ago, same place and everything an i think it was only 40 or 50 bucks but the engine was outa the bike and no oil, water, etc so he could lay it anywhich way to weld it.

heh, i doubt there's any oil on it right now, i sprayed it with carb cleaner to get the oil off and wiped it down, then left it alone under covers....and that was 6 months ago.

..............finally took it to a shop, first thing he says is "you're done"

meaning he won't do it or something. There was oil on some parts but not where the mounting points are broken. He said that it won't stick and it'll cost me around 200 bucks to get it done, and it won't work for sure. 1 in 100 chance.

Does that sound right?? Doesn't sound right to me at all.

If it were me I'd get crafty with some quicksteel before I did anything else. How bad is the case cracked? Is there a possibility of quicksteel getting in the engine if it doesn't hold right? A friend of mine looped an old gsxr600 when his tire gripped during a rolling burnout. His case was cracked pretty bad. None of our local welders would touch it because of the severity of the crack and also the fact that it was cast aluminum. He patched it up with JB weld and it held fine. He put a load of miles on it and then eventually sold it to a friend cheap as hell for a stunt bike. His crack was so bad you could see in the motor too. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

yeah i was thinking of trying that hts-2000 stuff, but didn't wanna wait for their shipping time..lol. and it'd cost about the same anyways, it's not cracked, it's just the points where the bolt goes through the stator cover and holds it on is broken. 3 pounts to be exact, and there's a little hole at the top where the sensor goes in. This isn't as bad as a crack into the engine, but it's oily all around.
