'02 Yellow Box Install: HELLLPPP!!??

Question for you guys that have installed this on the '02.

The destructions that come with the yellow box call for a "red/orange" wire (load/power), a "pink" wire (signal), and a "black/white" wire (ground).

I've looked behind the instrument cluster, outside the ECU, before/after the instrument cluster harness. I can't find determine which is the "red/orange" wire or the "pink" wire. (lots of wires, many are close to the description, but none fit the description)

Ideally, if someone could tell me which wires directly out of the ECU are the correct wires, I'd really appreciate it. Color(s) and location on the harness - ie "yellow w/black stripe & green dots, top row, fourth from the left"

FYI - I'm looking for the speed signal wire and the load/power wire for the speedo.

...already checked the service manual...

PLEASE help me

If I remember right, the speedo pulse wire is under the tank on the right side, on the inboard side of the frame spar. It's a 3 wire harness, and the color of the pulse wire is white with a yellow stripe. The 12v switched power wire is light brown. (In the harness plugged into the instrument harness). The power and ground should be easy to find with a multimeter. Oh, and you need the signal wire before it gets to the ECU, not after. The yellow box alters the signal sent to the ECU, not just what is sent to your speedo.

*Edit* Yup, just checked, those are the correct colors.

here was Roman's response...

Hi Steve, we give the wire colours for the 3 wires
on the SENSOR. After the sensor plug, which is under
the seat/tank, the 3 wires plug into the bike harness
where they change wire colours and are routed to the
speedo cluster.

I assume you want to connect directly behind the cluster,
so checking the R1 circuit diagram:

sensor cluster
O/R L/Y (goes to cluster)
P W (goes to cluster)
B/Y B/L (ground, may not be found at cluster?)

Hope that helps.
:o)

it was NOT very helpful

Roman seems like a great guy. It seems like he makes a great product, too. And his response time was quick.

Unfortunately, I don't think we communicated very well.

krystallcati,
OMG, thank you SO much.
I lifted the tank and found the speed sensor wires right away with you help.

I have another question for you...
I was under the impression that my new wire harness (the one that comes with the yellow box) would hook up to these wires.
1 - cut the signal and route via the yellow box first (white/yellow wire)
2 - splice the 'line' wire (blue) to power the yellow box
3 - ground the yellow box with the black/blue wire

from what you're saying, it sounds like maybe i'm suppose to:
1 - ground it wherever (i know it doesn't really matter where i ground it).
2 - power it from the cluster (again, probably doesn't matter).
3 - cut the signal on the white/blue wire.

Is that right? Is the Blue wire for load? and the Blue/Black a ground?

I really wanna buy you a beer right now - bike's been apart for two days

You've got it...I was just mentioning the light brown power wire as one that I've found in my multimetering. Find the closest power wire to the yellow box that is on when the ignition is on, and the closest ground. The only prob I see with his email to you is he seems to want to wire the yellow box into the wires at the back of the instrument panel, which I don't think will work. I believe the speed sensor on the '02 sends it's signal to the ECU, then the ECU sends a different signal to the speedo, NOT from the speed sensor directly to the speedo like it says in the yellow box instructions. I think it is because of the change to fuel injection this year. Good luck!!

Cool

Did you manage to find the speed sensor? What I did on the Interceptor was splice it in there. That way if you ever want or need to change speed sensors it comes out with it.

I just removed the whole speed sensor and brought it in the house to solder up. I am assuming that Honda and Yamaha are very close, just differnt wires. The yellow box does not do to the battery at all or even a ground. The three wires off the sensor has all that. also remember not to use common green for ground red for hot thinking. Just follow what Roman says and it will all workout.

Thanks, guys

yep,
after krystallcati's post, i was able to locate the wires for the speed sensor. i spliced to those three wires (intercepting the signal) after the wiring harness. i wanted to do it before the wiring harness, but it was difficult to get to.

everything worked out great. many thanks to you guys.

the next morning - i was trying to compare speedo to my GPS and got nabbed for speeding on the highway
