1/4 mile drag tips and mods needed
i have recently taken up drag racing and got on this website to see what times other people are getting. apperently i sux at racing b/c my averave time without a strap was 11.3 with a best of 11.1, and my average with the stap was about 11 with a best of 10.8. I have seen people on here posting times in the low 10's and even in the 9's. now i have a 2001 R1 with the only mod being a full vance and hines exaughst system that was on there when i bought it. if anyone has any input as to what i can do to get better times it would be greatly appreciated.

post up some timeslips (just the numbers), so people can try and figure out where you're not doing so well.
is the engine tuned for the exhaust? some timeslips and details about how you are currently riding it... what rpm you shift at, what rpm you launch at, do you use the clutch after first gear, etc.

my 60' times were all in the 1.9's, launching at around 5-6 grand and shifting at various different rpm's.
this was my best run today
r/t .144
60' 1.864
330 4.706
1/8 6.999
mph 105.9
1000 8.993
1/4 10.709
mph 130.82
i know nothing about the bike prior to me buying it
oh and i am 6'1" and 210 lbs if that makes a difference

ivans jet kit and airbox mod(ivans) helped. that bike should get 60s real good. i mean you should be low 1.60s easy. what gear are u going thru in? with ur weight and that altitude that bike should be in mid 10s or lower. 10.30-10.50s. lowering it and strapping really help...i mean alot. my old 00 60 ft 1.48s stock length with some mods.cams, pipe, jet kit, l;owered and geared. but im a lightweight too.

Lowering straps up front, and dog-bones in the rear will make your feel much more confident at the launch. Take the mirrors off. No joke, take em off and it will help just a bit with wind resistance. After lowering the bike a touch, you can launch a higher RPMs to improve your 60ft aswell as the overall run. The R1 can be touchy to launch, but once you get that down you can break into the 9's
Are you lifting the front wheel at the launch, or spinning it up?

I raced my 02 a few weeks ago. First time Ive raced in about 5yrs, so I was A LOT rusty. Mine has a slip on carbon fiber M4 pipe, stock gears, stock airbox, it is lowered 2"~3" front and rear, and stretched about 4". Best time out of 6 passes was as follows:
1.794 60'
6.97 1/8 mile
108.46mph 1/8 mile
10.541 1/4 mile @ 133.58
60' definitely needs work! Found out I had a slipping clutch, so Im sure that had some affect on my times. And I also forgot to lower my tire pressure (spinning). Clutch issue is resolved and I plan to race tomorrow night! I'll keep you posted on my progress.
I've heard guys here say they turn 9.80~9.90's with stock set up and not strap...unless they're Ricky Gadson or Brock Davidson, I seriously doubt it...but you never know?!?

track and conditions make difference. on newer models at good sea level track, 9s are fairly common for good rider. i dont know about 02-03s tho. strap makes a huge diff and so does lowering it.

Yes he did, but thats not all that was done to it. He had the seat off (lower center of gravity), front sprocket was -1, and Im pretty sure it was strapped...is this correct?? I saw this article in Cycle World or Sport Rider...cant remember which?!?
And like you said, thats what he does for a living!!

He did set the bike up a bit, but without any power increasing mods it's still very impressive. Funny thing about it is that Ricky races for Kawi and he couldn't get into the 9's with any of the 600s except for the Yamaha

Go down 1 tooth in the front. Strap the bike. Put 50psi in front tire. pry rear brake pads away from rotor. Clean chain and lube before racing. And loosen the rear axle nut so it isn't overly tight.
Use 87 octane gas and remove air filter when at dragstrip...
