Just a quick question-
What temperature does your bike normally run at in traffic? Every time I am stopped at a traffic light and the outside temperature is somewhere between 85 - 95 degrees, my bike's temperature goes through the roof...constantly between 200 and 220 degrees. Is this normal? Does this happen to everyone's bike?

Thats normal, here in Florida mine in traffic ranges from 214-226, and at 220 the fan comes on.
The highest my bike has gone was 238, stuck in traffic on South Beach, Miami.

If you are really concerned about the temp just splice a spst(single pole single throw)switch...$2.99 local radio shack into your fan switch that enters your radiator. I use this exact setup on my turbo r1 AND Redline's Water Wetter and my bike rarely goes over 195 EVEN in 100 degree summer heat.
In other words simply flip the switch when u feel its getting to hot. CAUTION: just don't forget to turn it on at a stoplight in the middle of August!!!!

Just be carefull, you dont want to over cool the engine.
The engines are designed to operate at certain temperatures so if you cool them too much then the tolarances will be off

I am talking about the people that wire up a switch to turn on the fan whenever they want
With the switch, the thermostat is bypassed

Yep, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Mine runs like everybody else's: 200-225 (fan kicks in at 220) in stop-n-go , 185-200 on the move !

Shadow One,
The thermostat is mechanical on the R1 and all bikes I can think of. With a switch, the thermostat is not bypassed. Actually, if the switched is installed properly, nothing is bypassed. All that is done is the rider can turn on the fan if he desires. On the '02 R1, the Coolant Temperature Sensor reports the coolant temperature to the ECU. If that temperature reaches a certain value, the fan is turned on.
The thermostat on the '02 R1 is designed to open when the coolant is in the 160 to 185 degree range. If the fan is left on and the coolant temperature gets below 160 degrees, the thermostat will close and no coolant from the radiator will flow into the engine.
The only way to get the coolant too cold, would be to remove the thermostat from the thermostat housing. This would cause the coolant to flow through the radiator at all times.
Scott
