Unbelievable THEIVES!!! Must Read!
This is not a "be on the lookout for" story, more of a general warning to all bikers.
I was told about it last night, it was a friend of a friend kinda thing. He was riding down a toll road interstate here in Florida called the 417, it is not a heavily travelled road and he was wearing brand new Oakley glasses and no helmet. He turned his head for a second and they flew off his head, he immediately pulled over to the shoulder to see if he could retrieve them. He left his bike running on the shoulder, and ran back. When he picked the glasses up he turned to go back and saw a car pulled over, a guy jump out, hop on his bike and take off!!! They have a picture of the guy running a toll booth on the road but it doesnt show much.
His cell was in his trunk so he couldnt even call the cops right away, or a ride to pick him up! Talk about wrong place wrong time... I just can't believe the odds. My friends were talking about getting a massage yesterday while we were out riding, I told them there is no way in hell I would leave my bike anywhere unattended in this friggen town for even 5 minutes.
On a side note, another friend of mine went down to Miami to purchase a streetbike and a dirtbike from a seller, he loaded both into the bed of his truck and on his way out of town stopped at a walgreens for a soda and snack, he was in there maybe 3 minutes, he walks out to find 3 guys around his truck, the straps cut, and the bikes laying on each other with these guys trying to lift them out. He yells at them and they look but just keep working, then he pulls a 9mm out and yells again, they didn't even flinch, and some big lady in a Navigator says "hey cracker you better put that away before I pull out a real gun" He was on his cell but had no service, acting like he was talking to the police, he said loudly his location, and "oh so you have a unit nearby? Hurry please" and I guess that finally spooked them into leaving.
Whats the world coming to when pulling out a gun in broad daylight won't even scare off potential theives???
Keep your bike in your living room if you have to, rent a storage unit, don't waste your money on locks and chains that can be cut, and maybe your bike will be safe.

Damn!!! Where at on 417 ? I tell people all the time there are some thievin fawkers in Orlando. I've said it more than once on this forum, I won't take my sheot anywhere in Orlando that I can't see it and reach it in a short sprint. That's some messed up sheot. The toll plaza records will also show the car that dropped him off if he can remember it. Whatever detective has the case will have to subpeona the records though. ( Fat chance on that for a sportbike though. )
This is exactly why I got out of the import car thing. Same as with bikes. Probably the same people out of Kissimmee that steal cars that took his bike.

I for one am the strongest advocate for helmets but that is not the issue here. I lost my EPass once, when it flew out of my pocket, and my cell phone, both times I pulled over and went back for them, I was wearing my helmet. I don't remember if I left the bike running or not, but I probably did. Now I know for sure I won't next time.

I believe you, but you have to admit that we live in what's probably the squid capitol of the world. And no the helmet is'nt the issue. Stealin assed bastards are and we don't have a shortage of them or squids.
On a helmet related note: Did you hear about the guy last week over by Hunters creek found dead in the road? He was doing a wheelie apparently because he passed some cars on one wheel. When they caught up to him he was in the street with half his brain hanging out and the bike was sliding down the street. ( Helmet on the helmet lock ) Nobody saw it happen.

I've always found it odd to see people leave their vehicles running and run inside. One that really amazes me is in front of a hotel to go register.
I don't even leave my vehicles running in front of my house.
BTW Solidus didn't that guy know, the helmet was for his head, no the bike?

I'm sorry but if I came out and some assholes were cutting the strap holding my bike and trying to steal it I WOULD double tap each and every one of them AFTER I gut shot them first and poured gasoline on them and lit it. Cops could question the ashes.

Sooo...the dude pulls a gun and what just sits there with it?
Rule of thumb I have always gone by...never pull it if you arn't gonna use it. Why did he even have it? Threatenign someone will just get his ass shot.

actually probably would been the one to goto jail.. law states drawn only upon life threatening issues.. doubt stealing a bike was life threatening although probably felt like it.

I was just in Florida and was reminded by the lack of a helmet law by all the bikers out there riding with their hair flowing in the wind. I think this type of crime would have been avoided if there was a helmet law because thieves can't just hop on a bike and take off without having a helmet available to them, or they risk being pulled over for driving without one.
I remember when Florida got rid of their helmet law and that woman, who led the charge, crashed and had serious head trauma as a result of not having one on.... not sure if she died or not.
Just my 2¢.

To Floridians:
First off, if you pull a gun, use it. Otherwise you're asking to be shot in the back. In Florida, we have the "stand your ground" law and the "castle law", much like Texas. You are permitted to defend your life, the lives of others, and your property with deadly force. No questions asked.
If someone tries to steal your bike, your watch, your cash, break into your home, or even steps on your property and you perceive this as a threat to you or your property, you can fire away, stab away, or swing away.
Support this law guys! It is the ONLY way to be sure that no one will become a victim or at the very least have a fighting chance against criminal scumbags.
