Ok so i took my bike apart to polish the frame, When i put it back together it wont start? All the lights and the instruments come on except the neutral light does not come on ( and yes it is in neutral) and the engine wont crank over. I put a jumper wire from the batterie to the starter and it cranks but im not getting any spark. If anyne has any suggestions on what it could be or what i could do to find out please HELP!!!! Thanks

Looking at the wiring schematic it looks as though your ignition fuse is blown. This would cause all of your headaches that you've described. There is a fuse box under your seat on the right hand side and your starter relay has fuses in it I believe, the ignition fuse is a 15 amp fuse. Do not put in a higher amperage fuse, if it blows check for a grounded circuit. If nothing is blown I can help you further, get back to me.

It looks as though your neutral light is grounded by the neurtal switch but the current flow has to go through the relay unit. The bike should still start even if the neutral switch is f#$ked, the clutch being pulled in and the sidestand up will start the bike if the neutral switch is no good.

Check the sockets the 15 amp fuse is in, it may be that one is not making contact. Your going to need a test light or a multimeter if you want to start testing things. Comments

The reason why I'm thinking it's the ignition fuse/socket/connection is this, it provides power to your on/off swich and your ignition unit. The on/off switch closes a relay that allows you to power the starter relay with the start push button. Does your fuel pump click when you turn the key on?

When you jumpered the starter relay to turn the engine over was the kickstand down? If it was down your bike would not have made any spark when the engine was cranking over because it thinks its in gear. Have you downloaded the 2000 R1 supplementry manual? Have you checked any connections with a test light or multimeter? What I may do is get the schematic and take out all the circuits that are irrelevant to you, this would show you what you need to test.

Try putting it in first gear then roll it a bit then try going back to neutral see if you can get the light to come on

bender , thanks for your help today. after talking to you i understood how to read the schematic. I tested all the relays and im pretty sure the relay unit is bad because i was not getting any continuity where there should have been.

so i thought it was thr relay unit that was bad...WRONG , i picked it up today paid $50 for it , came home put it in and nothing. so now i start from scratch. My main question is what would cause the neutral light not to come on? and exactley how do i test the neutral switch for continuity?I think i may have bee doing it wrong .

I agree with Maxprimal. Its not likely that You would damage a switch or fuses, but more likely to have left off some ground wires or connectors not connected properly.

Check and make sure that the five grounds in the starting system are clean and connected to a good ground. I'll attach a couple pages that are useful.

We will figure this s#*t out sooner or later. Hopefully sooner for Your sake

Ok guys i did a little continuity testing today and this is what i came up with, Starter switch...OK , Battery ground...Ok , Starter motor ground...OK, But when i checked the side stand switch i got nothing . I checked it by putting the positive connector ( from the multi meter) to the green wire and the negative connector to the black and got no continuity, also when checking the neutral switch for continuity i got nothing. I pulled the neutral switch out to look at it , and if you have ever seen one off of the bike it looks like the positive connection goes straight through and it gets grounded out by being screwed into the motor. I checked for continutiy from one end to the other and got nothing. so what do you guys think? what are the chances that both are bad? any comments or any input at all i would appreciate. I am attaching a pic of the neutral switch out of the motor so you can see what im talking about.
