Talking 99 R1 Vs 06 R1

I was cruising down the freeway the yesterday after a session at the gym and came across a GSXR 750 and an 06 R1 which looked sick as hell! Anyway they both downshifted and waved forward to indicate a race, I nodded and accepted, the guy rapped his R1 out a second before me and I just hammered past him without even going high into the RPM's, blew away the Gixxer and came off the freeway at my exit.

Now I was told that my engine was rebuilt for racing but I never believed it, the R1 is my first sportsbike and I must admit it's fast, the previous owner re-geared it for cruising too.

My question is, was this guy a rookie like me and just couldn't handle full throttle or is the 99 r1 faster than the newer bikes?

I am just a curious beginner, thanks in advance for your replies.

The 99 motor would need some work to crush a new R1....My guess is the other rider was sleeping, wasn't racing or sucked.

Oh ok, I was just curious, he did seem to hammer his bike though but still I passed him. My bike engine (so I was told) was rebuilt for the track by AJ's custom cycles. I had no proof of the work, just a business card.

the 98-03 r1 is quicker off idle through the mid and upper midrange than 04-07 r1, thats what made those years of R1 so good and they are not geared as tall either which also helps and while the 04-07 R1's will out pull the older r1's it's not by as much as you would think until you reach there top speeds then the 04-07 will kill you !!!

I heard something about that, and I also read some 1/4 mile stats that the 99 R1 was the leader of other bikes, would anyone else agree on this?

Same here.
I have 2001 r1 and from the light up till about 155 once i am in front I stay their. After 155-160 I get my arse handed to me by the newer r1's and 10's.

But my 2001 steel feels faster than the new bikes.

Thats the way I see it too. 150+ on the streets is not for me. Its all low down on the older ones.
