Charging problem....
Bike started misbehaving the other day. Oh well she's about due to make a fuss.
Initially it started with poor starts/bump starting. Now it's completely dead.
Just as it died, it looked as though it was running really low on electric power, lost one headlight altogether (bulp blew) the other headlights low-beam blew shortly after....only 1 high beam left running)...digi gear indicator was spazzing.....rolled up to the driveway and killed it...bah!; clearly the battery was keeping the bike going and not getting charged.
SO ....ran some tests;
Old Battery; 11.8v (after riding to 'sauga from hamilton)
Spare Battery 12.8v
Tossed the spare battery in; wired it up; it fired right away no probs)
Spare Battery Off: 12.8v
Spare Battery standy: 12.5v (no headlights, just gauge cluster/fuel pump)
Spare Battery running: 12.34v; (no headlights)
Spare Battery running: 12.11v; (1 high beam)
CLEARLY; I was not getting ANY charge to the battery whatsoever.
So on to test the stator and rectifier/regulator.
3 phase Stator wire:
Service manual spec says 0.19~0.23 ohms
Checking at harness:
1-2 => 0.2 ~ 0.3 ohms
1-3 => 0.2 ~ 0.3 ohms
I dont know whether there is supposed to be continuity between the 3 posts; but there definitely IS.
There are ***NO*** burnt/corroded plugs.
So if its one of the two; which one is it? Or is it both?
Sigh; my first day off with 21c and im stuck doing this bs =\

I bet the regulator is toast. Also, The Ohm test on the stator doesn't always work. I have seen a stator test good on ohms, then I did a amp output test and found it to be a bad stator.

Forgot to also mention; when revving at 5000rpms there was no change in the voltage.
How else can i test the stator?

Since there is no test for the regulator, I'd put a new one in first and inspect the wire connector on it for burn marks/good connection.. since its such a common problem. To do the amp output test you need an inductive amp meter clamp and I check the AC voltage coming from each white wire, and they should all be pretty close. The service manual kinda sux for electrical because they ahve you go through a few checks and at the end, conclude replace X part without a test for it.

The harness plug and the rectifier itself are both mint and show no signs or corrosion or burning. It's really weird.
By any chance will an 04+ R1 rectifier work? They look totally different (bigger heat sinks on the 04) but the plugs are the same.
