01 stock suspension
OK, I'm not happy AT ALL with the R1's stock suspension. Granted, I am a heavier rider so I know I'll need to do some work. I am curious as to which fork oil(weight and brand), springs, and valving most track day riders are using. I was gonna go with a set of Racetech .95 mm springs (rated for my fat arse), gold valves, and I guess my biggest question would be which weight oil to use. What's the stock oil weight?
Also, is the 02/03 rear shock even worth trying or should I just look for an Ohlins or Penske?
As far as rider wieght, I'm looking to set it up for 220 lbs with my gear on.
Any other tips or suggestions from some racers/track day riders would be much appreciated.
Thanks!!

PM sent. The Ohlins rear is awesome. I would recommend having Traxxion rework your forks.

.95 springs is not for you. You need stiffer for your weight. Call Lindemann and they're very helpful.

Fork oil weight is US01. You don't want to use motor oil, fork oil is different, and designed for a totally different task. I strongly recommend Shock Therapy. I go longer at track days since I've put that in. You will notice a difference just buy letting Race Tech do all the work, and using their oil (Shock Therapy is better though).

Well, here's an update for anyone interested. I found a 2002 rear shock for my 01. Slapped that on and just finished my fork overhaul. Did a racetech gold valve kit, racetech springs, and a GP Suspensions rebound valve kit. Used Silkolene 10 weight synthetic fork oil. Need to get some track time to see how it acts under some decent speeds. Also threw on a Scotts radial damper. Phewwww, now I don't have to grit my teeth when putting a wheelie down...beed waiting for a nasty tank-slapper. No more!

Sounds like the front came together nicely. The valving should work with that oil.
On the rear, was the shock rebuilt? The valving is adequate for street duty, but leaves something to be desired on the track. Not sure what the taper is on the needles, but they benefit from revalving. If it's an original 2002 shock, it's likely due for rebuild.

I'm not trying to jack the thread, but I need a little help. I'm 6' 200lbs with gear on and have a stock 01 r1. I'm not doing any track days but I do enjoy some twisty roads. What would be the best set up I could get with what I have? I got a 03 or 04 rear shock that I was going to put on, but I read that it will hit my swingarm if I don't have it turned all the way up because of the way the reservoir is set up . Could I get away with it being a heaver guy? I'm not looking to win any races but the bike feels (squishy) and un-trust worthy going into tight corners.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

another update on the suspension
Well I haven't been riding the R1 lately. Been doing a lot of woods riding on the CR250 since the weather's a bit cold. Ask me about the suspension on that.... Anyway, my last track day at Pocono East Course made me feel good about all the mods I've done so far to the suspension. I plan on getting the 02 rear shock re-valved and re-sprung a bit more stiff. I noticed on the bumpy sections the shock stayed planted but on corner exit with a heavy whiskey throttle, the back end is still squatting and a bit mushy. That being said, the spring is one click from max pre-load.
The front end is very stiff for road riding. I have zero pre-load on the adjusters. On the track(again, Pocono East)I was pleased to see that it stayed well planted. Even coming into that kinked straight in front of pit out before the left hander. It stayed on course. No palm sweat necessary when trail braking. Not to mention the BT002s are a sweet tire. The money grubber department at Bridgestone must've realized that 002s were lasting too many laps so they made the 003 and made the tire wear poorly. Glad I have a new pair of 002s laying under blankets in the garage.
A jet kit helped alot with the power delivery and the tire warmers are a great confidence enhancer on the first lap out....
Later R1'ers. Happy New Year.

Why does Yamaha not specify a weight here? All the fork oils I've seen actually list a weight. So what weight is the stock weight?
Has anyone else use the shock therapy stuff? Any other opinions on what type of oil to get?
A rebuild is in my near future and I am currently collecting up all the info and parts I can.
Thanks.
