i change mine every 8-9k. I used to do it to see how the motor was running but now i got a custom map so i know exactly how its running. I would go thru the front and drop the radiator(change that fluid, ya know its old!)and do the smog block offs. It will make it alot easier on the next change(no ais crap in the way from the top. Whole thing should take 2-3 hours if you have the right tools and skills.

I think it was Wheatman that posted a how to on spark plug / smog plate change. Very detailed step by step procedure, with pics to boot. Look it up, it'll definitely save you time and the headache.

when i first did the Smog block off,,, i went in from the top,, and changed plugs while i was there... I just recently checked my vavles and changed my plugs again, since i was already in there.. and decided that it wwould be a whole lot easier to go in from the front... remove the front fairings and radiator,, and its all right there,, easy access.. It was a real pain doin it from the top..... just my opinion. Oh,, and i use cr9ek's. THats what they come with stock.

if you have block off plates top is not bad.. but i think its easier in front. remove fairings and take radiator loose, you dont have to remove it, just loose. as far as plugs on dyno.. i have tested all kinds and there is no difference in power. i run single electrod cr9e instead of cr9ek, one that there is no difference in power, 2 its easier to make gap smaller for nitrous with single electrode plug, there are way cheaper. honestly i dont think there is need for iridium plug in bike. some people may swear by them, but unless its little better mileage(which i cant see) or maybe they might last longer(which i change mine often anyway) i wouldnt spend that kind of $$$ on them. it takes me about 30 minutes to do plug change. first time took me over hour and then some. but now i know what to do and not do and its not that bad. if u take it to shop.. it will cost you couple of hours.

Also...if they were Iridium...you dont' gap them. You can very easily damage the iridium tip.

Stick with the stock CR9ek. The iridiums are a waist of cash.

i changed my plugs from the top. i didn't know it was possible to change from the front. even so, i don't think i'd want to, seeing as the radiator has to be dropped. but from the top, you do need gumby fingers for cylinders 1 and 4, but it is possible.

By drop...you remove three small bolts and it sits down about four inches...still attached and such to the hoses. but provides enough room to get your hands in there.
