Gearing
Can I go to a 48 tooth (+3 over stock) rear sprocket with no fitting issues?
Will the stock chain length work?

depends, where have you set your alignment/chain adjusters. If you set all the way out then I don't see it taking up the slack, if not, new chain, not fond of adding master links.
BUT, if you going to change sprockets then I always go for a new chain with new sprockets........

yoiur wheel base is going to shorten quite a bit, im -1+2 and i use a longer than stock chain, i like the slightly longer wheel base, its got less tendency to spin the wheel up

Ye listen mine was geared 16/48....but that was for track use...topped out at 254km/h with the rev limit bouncing...
If you looking for the same then I would also run the adjuster as far back as possible cause if you think the R1 can wheelie then power sprocket it and you'll have a handful...short shifting to 6th is the norm.

Check out the link using the 2004 R1, same thing, and you'll see for sure where you are going...works like a charm...

I only have 2000 miles on the bike. It's all original stuff right now. Current gearing is 17/45. The axel is in the middle of the slot at this time. I was hoping to go up to the 48 and use the OEM length chain. Will the chain be long enough?

I doubt it, it might be just to short....if you want to go through with it why not change the front to a 16? That gives you almost the exact same result, 10rpm difference......but you get a longer wheel base which is a good thing....
And, the front sprocket is cheaper..bonus.

I'm going to a -1fr/+2rr and I'm curious as to if you HAD TO get a longer chain, or was it personal preference...?
Great link too, thanx Scrat !!! (I didnt know that changing to a 55 series tire from 50 series would bump up the top speed, thought it would just effect the "speedo reading vs. actual speed"...) Top speed w/50 = 265 km/h, w/55 = 274 km/h...!

Ye, I used to play around for tracks use and ended up wasting time and money, this calc gets it done first time...I run stock then take note of revs gear and work that back to what I need for that track...change ratios till I get it and then, go buy the sprockets... ...works everytime..
If you go down 2teeth up front, how much clearance do you have on the swingarm upfront and hell but you now loading the chain with a tighter turning circle...??...not saying it won't work...
Tyre change...ye but I would not do it...unless you keep in mind that with a higher profile you'll change the handling....but well noticed...

I know what you mean, with all my mods I had, add the 16/48 conversion to...bouncing off the limiter in 6th was so easy...wheelied 1st to 5th, pulled away in 4th the one day from traffic lights...almost flipped her one day in 5th, hit small bump in the road, hit the throttle and she ALMOST looped on me...
Was fun for a week...

i went with a 520 conversion at the same time, but i think it would have just been long enough if i used the original chain, but it would have been real close.
with the 520, i chose to go 1 link longer because 1 link less was 2 short

Huh...? Do you mean "because 1 link less was too short"...? And I'm doing the 520 conv. too, but that doesnt matter when it comes to diameter/# of teeth...
What are other peoples opinions on how many links you need for a -1/+2 sprocket change...? I imagine any more than 2 links (over stock, 116 links) would be too long... 118 links max...?

-1+2=118 links total is what im using, and i still have plenty of room for stretch and adjusting, by the time it stretches that far that im out of adjustment, its trash and would needed to have been replaced long before
i chose to go one longer (118) for the slightly longer wheel base. (because i like it that way), with that much gearing---longer wheelbase is a godsend
117 was too short (shorter wheelbase) for my liking, but not to short to fit, will fit fine too
its up to you what you want for wheelbase in that situation

no prob, just be careful, because at that ratio, its putting down an insane amount of power to the ground and its going to use a bit more fuel,

It always best to run as large a front sprocket as you can because it keeps drive chain losses and wear rates to their lowest values. Drive losses and wear will be less with a larger sprocket because it has a longer turnining radius than a smaller sprocket. I really don't want to go to such a large reduction as the -1/+2 senario. I feel it would be too much for the street. I feel like I need a 7th gear as it is when crusing on the freeway with OEM gearing of 17/45. I thought going with just the 48 would be a little better for acceleration without increasing cruise RPM too much. As for wheelies........That's what I like to do, so the short wheel base would help and is OK with me. I feel the R1 is very long as it. I just don't want the gearing to be so low that wheelies are unpredictable.
So the general opnion is that the stock OEM chain length will NOT work with 17/48 gearing???????

I run -2F and have a combination of standard and +1R on a 520 chain. Top end doesn't concern me all I want is acceleration for the track. IF down one on the front is worth between 2 - 3 on the rear then I'm running the equivelent of +6 on the standard rear and +7 with the 46 tooth. It can be a bit wheely prone out of slow turns but it's worth the hassle of dabbing the rear brake to keep it down. 16/48 should be no problem as that's only +3 over standard.
