02 Elec Problem: dies after jumper cables removed

Hey guys, after a winter of planning on riding, and then every weekend saying "ok next weekend, palomar for sure." my bike won't start.

I jump started it, it fired right up so I let it run for a while with the jumper cables attached. About 10 minutes later I removed the cables, the bike stuttered and died, wont start again: its not holding a charge.

I'm pretty sure the battery is a goner, but before I buy a new one I'd like to know how to check the stator and R/R, without taking off the side cover (and draining all the oil). I read the sticky in this forum but it doesn't really give a good description of what wires to check and where they are. Thanks in advance

Personally, I would just get a new battery and hope the problem is solved.

There are some detailed posts concerning electrical checks for RR and stator in the Headwork Winter project thread (towards the end|) but its very long.

If the bike has been standing and was OK before I would suspect the battery.

im guessing its the stator... my buddies 636 was doing the exact same thing. as soon as you remove the cables it dies.
