My 2002 Drag R1
Alright. So my plans for the R1 are pretty much set. It's going to be for track duty only.
So far I have added:
-Soupy's adjustable rear link
-Front lowering strap
-Lowered forks 1.5"
-Scotts steering damper
-PCIII (no custom tune yet)
-Slip on exhaust
-Airbox mod
-Graves velocity stacks
- -1/+1 gearing (going to go up another 2 teeth if needed after the stretch)
Next round of stuff to get it ready for the track are:
-McCoys extensions
-EK DRZ2 530 chain
-Lower rear lowering link or mod the soupy's if needed
-Shinko 003 ultra soft tires
-Port Tech ported head (local porting company, real good results)
-Split gasket and milled head
-Hindle race header and 14" carbon fiber race muffler
-TPO AIS delete
-Graves slide stops
-PC ignition module
-Custom tune for the PCIII on race gas
I'm hoping to take my mid 10's and make them mid 9's on motor after I get the first round of stuff done. The bike has more in it as it sits, and hopefully I'll be able to get it out and run some lower 10's (10.40's is my goal, but I would REALLY like a 10.20) before I start throwing more parts at it (namely the head, tune, and motor work).
Here are pics of what the bike looks like now and my progress so far:

^^Sweet custom kickstand I made lol
Finally got my header/midpipe after waiting 6 days after it arrived... The damn post office tried to deliver it to my dads neighbors house, then she never told us until she dropped off all the other mail they had left there including my package not delivered slip. Oh well, I have it now, and all is good.

^^There you can see my Jardin RT One cf slip on...it's only 2" core/inlet/outlet, so that won't work!

^^Sweet header yo!

Collector and midpipe hug nice and close to the motor which is great, because as is I almost scrape the stock collector where it poked out of the lower fairings on a regular basis hah...

^^Full tank of gas so I didn't wanna pull it...so I just made a prop rode out of a piece of steel with some holes drilled in it LOL
Got off my lazy ass and finished installing the slide stops too.
Next up is take the fuel pressure regulator off to install the "booster" from graves, put everything back together, and then wait for the rest of my parts to come from McCoys, eBay for the chain, and Hindle to custom make my muffler (up to two weeks WTF ugh). More updates to come when extensions and chain go on, which should be Weds or Thurs of this week FINGERS CROSSED!

i wouldnt mill head and split gasket.. u run too close on piston to valve clearances. if u mill head.... then go ahead and mill it to what u want and run standard headgasket. but really i would just leave it alone and split gasket. sounds like ur on right path, tho even with split gasket...u wont need race gas.. i would run some oxygenated race gas thats not super high octane. like mrx01, VP u4.2, or MR9.. that alone will get u 4-7 more horsepower. u need compression like 13.5:1 or higher to even run anything over 100 octane... or it will slow u down. i ran c16 so when i used nitrous i would be safe..but on motor alone it slowed me down .2 on just motor from fuel. it ran 9.50's back then when running c-16, then switched to pump when i wasnt gonna spray it and ran 9.30s.

I run oxygenated Q16 in my bike and saw a significant loss in E.T. and gain in MPH. The local bike tuner here said he runs that in all of his bikes and always picks up. My bike has a generic off the shelf map in it for now, so I am interested to see how much more power I can get out of a real tune. I don't know if I would pick up anything by switching to MR9 or MRX01 with the lower octane, but MR9 is hard to find around me and the MRX01 is about $21 per gallon, whereas the Q16 is $15 a gallon.

Thanks for the tips! A buddy of mine runs split gasket + .015 milled head on his 05 (different motor I know) and that put him right around 13.5:1 but only left him 0.019 PTV clearance, so I figured I would just follow his lead - but if you say I'll risk too close PTV clearance for 02/03 motor I'll take your word for it LOL. I may do a set of pistons while I have the head off though as I really don't want to run nitrous or FI in the future anyway, so lots of compression might not be such a bad thing in my case

u can always do it, but u may have to have pistons worked on to make clearance.. problem is u can not undo milling head.. why i sugguested just gasket at least first.

How much does splitting the gasket boost compression on these motors anyway (removing middle layer, right)? I'm thinking about splitting the gasket, getting a set of pistons, and only doing a mild head mill if my builder can keep ptv clearance in check and if need be to get to my compression/power goals.

Little mini-update: got the fuel pressure regulator off and instaleld the graves fuel pressure booster...now I just gotta put everything back together and she'll be running (tomorrow probably) and wait on my extensions, chain, brake line, tires, and muffler.

Thanks dude!
Another little mini update: Now I'm just waiting on chain and brake line to get the rear in order - but in the mean time I ordered some billet spool sliders, and a PMR kill switch. I need to figure out my chain guard next as far as the little details go.
By the way, does anybody have any tips on putting the throttle body assembly back on the head? lol I have the boots on the head side now and clamped down, but I just can't for the life of me seem to get the TB's all aligned and at the right angle. Hrm...

always pain.. i use silicon spray on boots or wheel bearing grease so they slide in.. but still takes some pushing and cussing to get them in.

haha thanks I'll give it a shot. Got my McCoys extensions and chain in the mail today, so looks like I might have her rolling around this weekend, sans rear brake LOL...
EDIT: Scratch the extensions, McCoys sent me one good extension, and one that isn't even close to fitting! Three week wait...wrong extensions...got in contact with the manufacturer, SpencerCycle, and they said "My bad!" and are overnight me the correct parts Apparently one is the R1 extension, then the other is for a zx12 - when packaging somebody just grabbed the wrong one.
See for yourself:
oh well!

I have finally got all of my crucial parts in, and have everything ready to go! All I need to do is cut a couple lengths off the chain, bleed the rear brake, put the fairings on, and go for a ride Got her fired up tonight, idled fine, but I'm still waiting on my muffler to be made by Hindle so it's a bit much until then

No real update, but basically I've been waiting for a month for my muffler from Hindle, when it was supposed to take two weeks. Also, I'm thinking about running a dry kit until Winter 09/10 simply because I don't want to build the motor before I know what the bike is really capable of on motor as is (and nitrous will quench my thirst for more trap speed I guess haha).

hey about the high octane gas Q16 is the best gas and the safest out their.
well a friend of mine uses that kind of gas in a turbo honda but it might the safest but its the hardest too tune. once you tune it it helps out alot.
he gained mph and better e.t's on his honda
iam guessing it might be the same thing for a bike

I went faster with Q16 vs 93 pump gas, but I think it is a bit much for a stock compression bike on nuts. I now run MRX01. It is 98 octane and is about the best out there right now since they are phasing out MR9. If you were building a high compression motor on spray, then I would go Q16. Keeping it on hp, then run the MRX01.

Looks like muffler should ship from Street and Competition tomorrow or Saturday - hopefully the bike will be back together shortly after labor day. WOOT!
