Lightbulb Is 2500 miles a Good time to go Synthetic?

I am wonder if this is a good time to go synthetic. Also will it help with running a bit cooler. About to gut the cat also for heat reasons.
Thanks.

How many times have you changed the oil? I like to go through several cycles with just regular mineral oil. I usually wait until I hit around 5K miles before I make the change, but this is just me.

Only the first 800 mile oil change. I would always change the oil every 1000 miles on my other bikes, but now I dont have a garage to do it myself and it is a real pain

My opinion...once the oil is broken in you can go synthetic. Break-in periodis after about the firt 600 miles. Although this number varies accoding who you ask. I mad the switch to synthetic at 1000. No harm.

Good info. I'm at about 2500 miles and was wondering the same thing. I guess I'll make the change.

Yes, it is likely that using synthetic oil will free up a little bit of horsepower in your engine.

Like maybe a half.

Absolutely not, I just did a rebuild on my race bike which is a superstock class motorcycle, hence this is the first time I have been into its motor. It spun a rod bearing and this is the third clutch I have went through in 7500 miles. My mechanic and I came to a common conclusion that me using synthetic oil is the reason my clutches keep failing and why the bike kept losing power because the sythetic oil was so smooth that in 7500 miles my rings NEVER seated! And the clutch never fully engages because of the same reason so the pressure plates were literally starting to melt. Thankfully the yoyodyne basket and slipper assembly were not hurt. Stay away from synthetics they prematurely killed major parts of my motor.

thanks, since this old thread others have told me their 07-08 R1's slip the clutch with synthetic as well. I still haven't tried synthetic in mine ever since a local guy with a sweet blue R1 said his was trouble with it

Hmmm..... don't see how this is possible. Synthetics do not modify the friction properties - that's a property of the oil additives. Synthetics simply hold up to the shear forces much better than conventional dino stuff.

I suspect that your anticdotes regarding Synthetics and clutch slipage is related to a blend of additives (probably an automotive oil vs a M/C oil) that are part of the friction modifiers package - typical in many automotive motor oils.

Do some research on motor oil before you make any decisions. For me, if I break-in an fresh motor (regardlless of application), I'd do 45 mins or 25-50 miles on a fresh motor and change with conventional oil and filter. Then at 3000 miles or 60-100 hours, I'd change over to a fully synthetic oil and a micronic filter. My personal fav has been Purolator PureOne micronic filters and oil will depend on application. For M/C it's always been Shell RotellaT fully synthetic, but I've been considering trying the Amsoil product.

Change oil and filter every 6 months or 3000 miles and you can't go too wrong...

Jim

PS - I also like to use a magnetic oil drain plug. You'd be surprised at how well it works to collect the ultra fine powdery ferous metal that gets circulated in the motor oil and not caught by the filter.

Yes i also use the magnet drain plug, i use Mobil 1 and change every 2,000, my main concern is the trans, clutch, using the same three quarts of oil as the engine, rapid bearing wear if the oil is not changed.
