Where to spray starter fluid : Yamaha R1 Forum

My r1 sat with some fuel in the lines this winter and apparently gummified as it turns over but does not start.. This happened to another R1, he just sprayed in some starter fluid and it started right up..

Question is.. Where do you safely spray in starter fluid to get the party started? I'm not a mechanic but I am able to take the gas tank off, get to the throttle intakes and thats about it..

Can somebody put me in the right direction on where to spray in the starter fluid to start it up?

ps, I don't want to blow my arms off or anything.

Just into the intakes is fine. The less you use the better. Too much can wet the plugs. I wouldn`t worry much about blowin anything up

Thanks, do I force the intake flaps down to spray deeper inside? Also, Im assuming I'll have to put the airbox back on and put the gas tank back on before firing correct?

Best place in my opinion is under the air filter ....kind of a pain in the azz though ...Ive started cars that is not easy to spray fuel into with propane...into the air inlet ...not quite of a mess on painted surfaces...and blends with 02 easily....I've never started a bike with propane though ...so your on your own ...weather to try or not to ....if you don't feel comfortable with it don't try it ...

Starter fluid evaporates very quickly. By the time you put the airbox and tank back on it will have evaporated off. If you can just spray it at the air intake that should work. What you want to do is spray while the you are starting the engine as you normally would. What I mean is, turn the engine over and spray at the same time. No more than 1 second bursts at a time.

So I'll just shoot the starter fluid right into the air intakes at the front of the bike while turning over.. Will it get through with the air filters in there? I'll give this a try tomorrow am and let you all know how it goes.

yeah spray enough of that shyte into the ram air tubes, its bound to make something happen

it worked, I actually pulled off the air intake tube and sprayed right up in there.. It took a little more than I thought it would.. about 15 seconds of spray while turning over the starter.. My bike lives! Thanks!
