HOW TO:Installing Power Commander V on R1 2009

Maybe its me but the installation instructions for the PCV provided by dynojet is very vague. However, during my install I took some pics with my iPhone and decided to write the tutorial. I hope this can help someone trying to install this unit.
Before doing this you should install the software on a pc/mac and look for any map closely related to your setup, download and install. If you need help PM me.

First remove the two screws under the main seat.

You have to lift the ends of the seat to see the screws.

Should now look like this.

Now its better for you to remove this frame bracket, remove those four screws and that bracket where the tool kit strap is connected can now be removed.

Now it should look like this.

Now, remove ONLY the left side cover next to the left air intake duct. It can be alittle easier if you remove the left side fairing too ( I didn't). Remove those two screws.

Its time to lift the fuel tank but first we have to remove BOTH tank side panels. Remove that upper screw on the tank.

Should now look like this.

Ok, I forget to take a pic of the last screw we have to remove, its to the front of the tank you cant miss it. Now life the tank up and have something there to hold it.

Now towards the left side unplug those two green plugs from each other and then plug them into the power commander connectors.

After plugging the green connectors into the power commander connectors it should look like this.

Now this too me awhile so if you are blind like me ask some to look for you. In that little opening push the wire loom away and you should see a black connector (TPS- throttle position sensor )

ahh. there it is

Unplug connector and then feed the gray wire from the power commander to that location.

Dynojet provided a wire connector for you to connect the gray wire to the white wire on the connector (TPS connector). I just connect it directly, after connecting the wires together, plug the connector back to the TPS.

Now, on the right side of the fuel tank there is a black connector, O2, unplug and used the O2 module provided by DynoJet.( its the little black box with a connector)

Should look like this.

Ok, run the wire loom of the power commander up from the tank and to the left side of the bike frame, the ground wire should be spot on the ground terminal of the battery. Go ahead and connect the ground wire to the battery.

Now, turn on the bike and make sure everything is working then replace the frame bracket, plastics, tank and position the unit in a good position. I have mine there.

Closer look

Thats it my friends.... please post any comments

Be sure to update the firmware, it seems to fix some cold starting issues and also seems to help with the 5k stumble, judged through the butt dyno.

thanks for the post! I've got new slip-ons coming and am deciding if I'm going to gut the cat or buy the y pipe...the increased air flow requires more fuel, so I just purchased the PCV. I've read through multiple forum discussions about different maps and tuning issues and am trying to gather all helpful info and input prior to undertaking this mod. Anyone find any maps that seem to work better than others or any advise about y-pipe vs gutting the cat? Thanks!

Thanks for the write up just put mine on. Question for anyone I plan to put a bolt in the graves mid pipe how can you get the o2 plug out with out having to cut the wire in two? Seems there is not enough room between the frame and motor to pull the wire through?

I was impatiently pondering the same question when I had conveniently found a nice pair of tin snips laying on the bench next to where I was working on the bike...long story short, I don't have the answer but would be interested in finding out. You can't pull it up or down or even very far side to side.

Is there a special tool or a hint to get those plugs apart. There must be some trick to them.

you need to find the little tab on each and push it in, they are pretty tight though.

I removed the plug very easily by pushing the large tab up instead of down!

I thought the DynoJet instructions were very straight forward...

Nice first post and thanks, it gives me a clear picture of what I am up against when mine comes in.
Nothing to it, but showing the wire to tap into and where to find it makes it all the more easier.

I finally got around to installing mine today. Only took about 30 mins. Your step by step was a lot clearer than the ones that came from Dynojet. Nice post.

Yup I agree with V8Stroker....pretty straight forward...but not everyone can just fidgit and get-it--these instructions were very well put together! And the bike gets such a smooth power curve with the PCV...I dont' even know if I'll do the darn Auto Tune---probably gonna stick to a custom tune.....

Again...great write up!!!!

Load the map file via the usb cable, if you have an auto tune installed, leave it alone, or then take it for a professional tuning.

I wish it were that easy. But there are way to many issues with the PCV and Autotune right now for the 09. For instance you have to use the correct o2 sensor (one from factory not dynojets) and program in the right values for the autotune for all rpm's under 6k to get a map that works. Which takes out half of the rpm range of the bike for tunning with the autotune... and if your lucky like myself and a hand full of others on here you still get crazy values and the bike runs way too rich. I get 22 mpg with this combo and/or bad backfiring on decel. Bike runs better with it off so far.

BTW, anyone wanna sell there factory O2 sensor for the 09? PM me.

Just finished installing my Graves block-offs and PCV, both this howto and this one were very helpful, props to both authors!

I had a hell of a time getting the connector off the TPS to splice in the gray wire from the PCV. My advice: if you're doing both AIS block-offs and a PCV, do them both at the same time - it's *much* easier to disconnect the TPS while the airbox is off, at least if you're a noob with fat fingers like me . I did them in two steps so I could make sure the bike started and ran after each one and ended up taking the airbox off twice. All good so far, tomorrow the Akras go on!
