When to use 100% full Synthetic oils

Hi after running in a R1 how long before it is recommended to run full 100% Synthetic oils, spoke to local Yamaha dealer and he said that Yamaha recommends 12,000km, seems a lot of km's to do before using full Synthetic oil, he also said that Yamaha recommends semi Synthetic till the 12,000 KM's are reached.

100 different people will give 100 different answers...BUT, here it goes. Most standard of an answer would be to wait till ~2500+ miles. Some say it's ok from the word go, some say wait till f'n forever like my local shop. I could recommend a certain break-in link, but would probably forever get hate mail I switched to synth at 2500 miles and have no issues, don't let the OEM guidlines on break-in or oil you.

studies have shown that oils will break down greatly at 800miles and will gradually break down after that.

with that said, most "synthetic" oils are infact not truly synthetic, they are a groupIII that is so pure its considered synthetic.

read http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Oils1.html if u really want to know about oils.

+1....don't settle for synth that is not class 4!!! Motul has a class 5 (300V) but can't see the added$$$ over my Amsoil. Pick a high quality synth that YOU like, no car oils, and don't buy low grade. Cheers

You can switch to synthetic as soon as you want. It's just you're going to dump the oil so soon to flush out contaminates, and small amounts of metal from the assembly process, and parts meshing together for the first time. So why waste the money.

You can run a synthetic from day one, you've just got to run the engine harder to get the rings to seat.

You can change to Synthetic oil before you ever leave the Dealership.. Any mileage specification was purely the Dealer touting how much they don't know.

A good reason not to switch to Synthetic would be cost for that initial 600 miles.

The 600 change has nothing to do with oil breaking down. It is used to get machining and casting debris out of the engine. The heat cycling of the engine has proven to loosen particles that cannot be washed out before assembly.

I'm not a believer in "Search". You never can tell when some new information might come about.

Especially with oils as they are changing more frequently than ever before in history.
