How do i remove a starter on my r1

My starter is out on my 2004 Yamaha r1, i took it into a shop they want $800 to replace. I dont have that money. Can i just buy a new one or have that one rebuilt and replace my self? What is involved in taking the starter out?

Thanks
James Siegel

There are a few threads on hear outlining the procedure.
Try a search for "starter"

It's a pain to get to as it sits on top of the crankcase underneath the throttle bodies and a rubber heatproof shield.

you will need to remove the front seat, tank, airbox, throttle bodies and the skin from several knuckles to get to it.
Once you have found the little cnut, it only takes 5 mins to change it.
It's held in place by two bolts, and the lead from the starter relay is bolted on top of it.

It's straight forward, but time consuming because of all the parts you need to remove first.
