My 2002 Fz1

Hi there,

I joined the R1 forum a few months ago, with the intention of purchasing the ever-popular R1. Well, I got to thinking about owning two bikes, and all that comes with it. Then the reality of having twin boys set in...
2x everything became an idea I quickly fell out of love with. I decided instead, to spend the duckets on the bike I have now, and make it a bike that will hang with "you people!"

This is the bike as of the middle of April:

This is what the bike looks like today:

I have the forks off to Traxxion Dynamics to have the AK-20's installed. I have a Penske 8983 on order, R1 wheels with Artrax rotors, and Michelin PR2CT's. Pro-taper Yz high bars, Speedmetal levers, 07'R1 front master, Hel SS lines. As well as many other items that I will list as they are added. I must have picked up a bad case of Modifyititis from a hooker in Vegas... I guess not EVERYTHING stays there..

Wheels,

HID Bi-Xenon lights. 3000k/5000k.

And much more to come..

Thanks for the compliments! I will be sure to keep this thread up to date. I am waiting on parts atm... seems to be the mantra of customization!

It's been about a week since the last update, so...

I did a mock up of the brakes and bars. Everything looks good, although I did have to cut about 2" from each side of my windscreen to get it to fit the new bars. Even made the mistake of using a dremel 561 bit to cut the screen.. boy did it get chewed. Resigned to a cut wheel, and cleaned up my mess.. so much for worrying about melting the plastic.

I installed a NEW set of RavenRiders needles. Boy are they top shelf! I am going to get a dyno run, or two once the hard parts are all together, so I can get the a/f sorted.. should it need it.

I also greased the stem, and swingarm bearings, deciding to replace the pivot bolt with a new one. Added one engine case.. the other is on backorder.. Removed the carb coolant lines, capping all the plumbing on the carb bank. Cleaned the carbs, although I am going to pull them again to replace the float seals. I have the removal down to about 15 minutes from bike to bench.

I am still about 2-3 weeks from completion. With the weather finally warming up, it feels like forever! It's a small price to pay.

Looks like it is coming out awesome! Loving it!

With all the suspension work, are you taking it out on the track? My buddy had his 03 Fizzer out there and had a blast (all while grinding his frame sliders to bits, they weren't as short as your LSL's are).

I have had one track day so far, I am planning on a couple more hopefully this summer/fall. Miller is heaps of fun! Your buddy has some cojones! I get real timid when I start dragging hard parts!

They are Woodcraft cases coming from a guy on Ebay. I am less than enthused, but oh well.. I hope to have it this week. He said that he would have more by Friday. If he doesn't, I'm going to get a refund, and buy from someone else.

Nice, I had an 02FZ1 as well. A few targeted upgrades jetting, dyno tuning front and rear suspension by racetech (those stock spring rates were unbelievably soft). I loved suprising the "fast guys" who thought my FZ was not a "real sport bike".

I have been slacking, the weather has been too good, and I just changed the calipers up front to get rid of the last little bit of blue. All I need now is a new front cowling, and clutch cover. Then it will be perfect!

The Gen1 Fz1 is one of the best bikes i ever ridden.

Combined with Suspension work on both ends and a steering damper is ****ing able machine that will get you racing if you really up to it while remain freaking comfortable.

The power delivery is nuts too.

Id love to own one and maybe, maaaybe if ever sell the '08 ill take the shot and buy a mint 05 Fz1. Skunk color is my favourite btw.

Thanks SAB, it's a beast!

Chop, I have seen you on the Fz10a. A mint skunk would be a treat. I picked mine up in '08. It was a leftover purchased new in '04. The first owner sold it to me with 6999 miles, to buy a fat boy hardly... I am sure at some point, he was kicking himself. It had a s/o, and a corbin. I have kept the Corbin.

I had the bike at Miller Motorspeedway in '09, and it was capable. More so than I was. Now, it's so much better in the twisties! The suspension upgrades are worth every penny. The FZ handles rough road with barely a hiccup. It's on rails everywhere else..

Just over 30k on the clock. I don't usually ride from late November, through February.
