How To: DIY Radiator Guard
Note: Measurements in metric / suits years 04-06 R1, use the same principle on other bikes. Im sure you would have the same materials or something equivalent in your country.
Set me back only $23, $10 for the mesh (flyscreen place) and $13 for the edging
Step 1
Measure Radiator length and width, with a bendable measuring tape (if it has a bend) add an extra half a cm for cable tying ease
Step2
Buy some stainless heavy duty mesh from a flyscreen/security door place (enough for two just incase)
Step 3
Buy some edging (number 31) from Clark rubber (2m)
Step 4
Remove side fairings
Step 5
Cut Mesh to length (not taken account for edging)
Step 6
Drill Holes 6mm (Measure taken directly below/above rad supports)
Measurements not taken account for edging
Step 7
Add rubber edging, like pics before
(Rubber edging has metal strips inside that grab the mesh, no need for glue)
Step 8
Cable tie to radiator supports
Step 9
Put the fairings back on, have a beer / enjoy saving $$$

awesome. been wanting to do this for awhile but wasnt sure what to use to keep it from resting on the radiator itself. would the rubber edging be sold at most hardware stores? hows it hold up against the heat of the radiator?

Not sure our biggest hardware store 'bunnings' didnt stock it. If you cant find it, i guess i can always post some to you $13 plus postage.
(Not sure on postage cost though)
My last R1 had a commercial rad guard thats similar and did 80,000kms, without any issues. Someone else on another forum suggested the edging and they had no problems.
Similar rad guard

This will defiantly save a few radiators, and possible headaches. I would consider this as that saying goes "prior planning for perfect performance".

Yeah I've seen the Cox Radiator guards...and i'll be damned if im going to spend $75 on something thats made with $20 worth of material. I'll poke around home depot and lowes and Ace hardware this weekend.
Thanks for the write up.

to try answer some questions, as iv done one like the first one.
the rubber doesnt melt, i ended up just using rubber on top and bottom, took the sides off.
i got the rubber from para rubber, duno if you have that store.
i used zip ties to hold it on, the radiator has the ideal places to do so in three of the corners you will see a hole. just outside the cooling fins.(kinda where it mounts) zip ties havnt failed either.
it will come clear once you get into it.
i copyed a friends, both 07, he didnt use rubber edging at all. we have both had them on since just after the bikes were new and no problems. so at least three years.
we got our mesh from super cheap auto, its car grill mesh, many different colours. the holes look a little bigger, but dont let the small stone chips through.

WOOHOO Thanks to the mod for cleaning out the clutter between me and the troll haha. I didnt like ruining the mans "how to" thread but I also couldnt reach through the screen and smack a troll.
anyways I played around on ebay yesterday and found lots of the grille mesh for about $20 shipped for a good amount. but still gonna check out some hardware shops and such to see if i can find anything local. if so ill post up so others know what stores carry the parts needed

Stang, let us know what you find. I am interested in doing this myself, but haven't really found the mesh I think would work.

awesome man. i've been so busy with other projects i never got around to this one. and when i did have time for it was a flat broke and couldnt afford the supplies haha. post up the measurements for the 09 when you get a chance. pics of how/where you run your zip ties would be helpful too.
