strange noise, rough idle and engine cuts out
wtf? I have always had my '09 serviced at the same dealership I bought it from, hoping the consistency will prevent problems. But after the 16k service, I noticed a strange new (but quiet) "flappity flappity" noise from around the top of the motor after the bike has been running for a few minutes. I made the mistake of explaining it over the phone and had them pick it up. I got it back and the noise was still there. They said it had needed another CCT replacement, but I know that sound and this is much quieter & different. They tried to figure out what could be making it, but couldn't.
NOW (a few hundred miles later) it's idling rough, and twice has cut out at idle. what gives? I don't want them touching my bike again, and I complained to Yamaha (they asked for it, sending me a link to a survey about service...).
I chose to buy yet another Yamaha (3rd R1 in a row) because as much as I like looking at Ducatis I sure as hell don't enjoy their high-maintenance Supermodel bullshit. I had better luck at the indie shop I used to go to for my '04, but when I moved back to LA I just kinda felt like they didn't care about me as much as they used to.
They said it could be a valve adjustment issue, but the valves aren't due to be adjusted till 26,600! What do you guys think?

no, it's a soft, quiet noise like paper flapping.

no, I don't think they checked that. would I need to just look and see if they're attached or run some sort of pressure test?

I would check your plugs. It sounds like compression leak. I wonder if they left one loose or crossthreaded one.

well, the shop told me they'd pinched a wire and that was causing the idling problem. The noise, they still couldn't figure out. However, at the FASTEST screening (AWESOME movie, but depressing cuz it's basically about how much Rossi ROCKED on the M1. And now he's stuck on that Italian turd.) I met a guy who gave me a more intelligent answer, works for a bigger dealership which has a decent reputation. He told me they have since corrected the valve adjustment interval to 16k from the 26k in the manual. (or at least they should be checked at 16k.) He asked for my VIN and will talk to Yamaha about it to get them to cover the cost of the early valve adjustment. He also said the throttle bodies should've been synced and I don't know if they did that at the 16k service or perhaps did it wrong. We'll see.
