How to: Remove bar end inserts
So, I bought a pair of bar ends for my bike off eBay. I went to install them and they were not a direct bolt on. The ones i got go in further and have a rubber plug that gets squished/ expands to hold it self in the handle bars. I took the stock ones off, low and behold, a threaded insert. I tried what I could and finally found the easiest way.
Step 1: Remove bar end and rubber grip from the handle bar. Removing the grips, if it's the oem ones, you will need some brake cleaner. There is some kind of epoxy glue that holds on the grip. Also, having air and a nozzle to shoot under the grip, that helps a lot also.
Step 2: take a bolt(or the one that you removed) and screw it into the insert( don't install the bar end, just the bolt) and put a set of vise grips on the end of the bolt.
Step 3: get a small torch and heat up where the insert is while pulling out. With in about a minute, it should pop right out. The inserts are glued in and the heat helps break them. Just don't get the bars to hot, not sure if it would ruin the electronics.
If you need to, you can reuse it. I put mIne together as a set and put them away incase I want to change them back.
That completes the clutch side
The right side(accel side) is a ton easier to do because you dont have to mess with removing the grip from the handle bar.
Step 1: remove bar end and also the two screws from cable guide box of the throttle. Once done, set the halves aside( take note that the screws are two different lengths) **top-long: bottom-short**
Step 2: remove the cables from the throttle( keep in mind that the cables will hook up at the bottom, and also te position of the throttle)
Step 3: once that's done, every thing should slide off and your left with bare metal of the bar
Step 4: since you don't have to mess with the grip( attached to throttle tube) continue from step 2 from the first set of directions.
***when your done, make sure you clean the metal before applying the grip. Using hair spray, it will slide on easy and when it drys it will act like glue***
Hope this helps people looking how to remove the bar ends
